One day near Christmas when I was just a child
Mama called us together and mama tried to smile
She said you know the cottoncrop hasn't been too good this year
There's just no spending money and well at least we're all here
I hope you won't expect a lot of Christmas presents
Just be thankful that there is plenty to eat
That's quite a blessing that'll make things a little more pleasant
And us kids got to thinking how really blessed we were
At least we were all healthy and best of all we had her
Roy cut down a pigapple tree and we drug it home Jack and me
Daddy killed a squirrel and Louise made the bread
Reba decorated the tree with popcorn strings before we went to bed
Mama and daddy sacrificed cause this Christmas was lean
But after all there was the babies Tom and Joanne babies need a few things
I whittled a whistle for my brother Jack and though we fought now and then
When I gave Jack that whistle he knew I thought the world of him
Mama made the girl's dresses out of flower sacks
And when she ironed them down you couldn't tell that they hadn't come from town
A sharecropped family across the road didn't have it as good as us
They didn't even have a light and it was way past dusk
And mama said well I bet they don't even have coaloil or beans to boil
A log apples cranges and such
Me and Jack took a jar of coaloil nd some hickernuts we'd found
We walked to the sharecropper's porch and set 'em down
A poor old ragged lady eased open the door
She picked up the coaloil and hickernuts and said
I sure do thank ye and quickly closed the door
We started back home me and Jack and about halfway we stopped looked back
And in the sharecropper's window at last was a light
So for one of the neighbors and for us it was a good Christmas night
Christmas came and Christmas went Christmas that year was heaven sent
Then daddy put on his gumboots waited for the thaw back home in Dyess Arkansas

Noël comme je le connaissais

Un jour près de Noël, alors que j'étais juste un enfant
Maman nous a rassemblés et maman a essayé de sourire
Elle a dit que tu sais que la récolte de coton n'a pas été très bonne cette année
Il n'y a tout simplement pas d'argent à dépenser et au moins nous sommes tous là
J'espère que tu ne t'attendras pas à beaucoup de cadeaux de Noël
Sois juste reconnaissant qu'il y a de quoi manger en abondance
C'est une bénédiction qui rendra les choses un peu plus agréables
Et nous, les enfants, nous avons commencé à réfléchir à quel point nous étions vraiment bénis
Au moins, nous étions tous en bonne santé et surtout, nous l'avions
Roy a coupé un pommier et nous l'avons traîné à la maison, Jack et moi
Papa a tué un écureuil et Louise a fait le pain
Reba a décoré l'arbre avec des chaines de pop-corn avant que nous allions au lit
Maman et papa ont fait des sacrifices car ce Noël était maigre
Mais après tout, il y avait les bébés Tom et Joanne, les bébés ont besoin de quelques choses
J'ai taillé un sifflet pour mon frère Jack et même si nous nous sommes battus de temps en temps
Quand j'ai donné ce sifflet à Jack, il savait que je l'aimais beaucoup
Maman a fait des robes aux filles avec des sacs de farine
Et quand elle les a repassées, on ne pouvait pas dire qu'elles ne venaient pas de la ville
Une famille de métayers de l'autre côté de la route ne s'en sortait pas aussi bien que nous
Ils n'avaient même pas de lumière et il était bien après le crépuscule
Et maman a dit : "Eh bien, je parie qu'ils n'ont même pas de pétrole ou de haricots à faire bouillir."
Des pommes en bûche, des oranges et tout ça
Jack et moi avons pris un pot de pétrole et quelques noix que nous avions trouvées
Nous avons marché jusqu'au perron du métayer et les avons déposées
Une vieille dame pauvre et en haillons a entr'ouvert la porte
Elle a ramassé le pétrole et les noix et a dit :
"Je vous remercie beaucoup" et a rapidement refermé la porte
Nous avons commencé à rentrer à la maison, Jack et moi, et à mi-chemin, nous nous sommes arrêtés, nous avons regardé en arrière
Et dans la fenêtre du métayer, il y avait enfin une lumière
Donc, pour l'un des voisins et pour nous, ce fut une bonne nuit de Noël
Noël est arrivé et Noël est parti, Noël cette année-là a été envoyé du ciel
Puis papa a enfilé ses bottes en caoutchouc, attendant le dégel, de retour à la maison à Dyess, Arkansas.
