Saco De Ouro

In a coarse sack with a woven strap tied,
I have kept my passion tucked inside.
An old boot, a gold-colored hat,
A leather sheath, and a well-worn knife.
I have a pair of spurs,
A harness and a lasso,
A steel dagger, and an armadillo tail tassel.
I have a cartridge belt that's still in perfect shape,
Meticulously made of raw leather.
Of the broken lantern, only the wick remains,
To remind me of the cold, I also kept
A white sheepskin that has lost its wool.
Despite the care with which I tended to it,
The long-pipe made of bamboo,
How many mosquitoes I have warded off with it.
A left-side stirrup,
Which I have carefully kept,
Because I broke the right one on the fence.
The sales receipt, now yellowed,
Of the first saddle that I bought myself.
In Soledade, at the Cinta Warehouse,
Two hundred and thirty, I paid for it right away.
The pay slip, now all crumpled,
The first paycheck I ever earned.
It's my gear in a sack tied shut,
Tucked away in a corner, that I have always kept.
To me, it represents a beautiful past,
The cattle work that I have always loved.
That's how I faced this hard labor,
And built my future without breaking the law.
The sack is a relic with my tools,
I won't sell it or let anyone lay a hand on it.
