Lūgšana
Prayer
Kungs, kas zāles čukstus dzirdi,
My Lord, who hears the whispers of the grass,
Kas pat smilgai neliec ciest,
Who does not let even a blade suffer,
Words there are, that in Latvian hearts burn and ember, and never perish.
Vārdi ir, kas mūsu dzīslās
Words there are, that through our veins
Līdz ar pirmo dienu skan,
From the first day have sounded,
Jo Tu licis šajā zemē maniem brāļiem dzimt un man.
Because You made my brothers and me to be born in this land.
Kungs, mēs ticam, ka Tu gribi,
My Lord, we believe that that is Your will,
Un ka tas Tavs svētais prāts,
And that it is Your holy mind,
That this people should always live and that they should reap the harvest of this land.
So that over these valleys and hills our Latvian tongue may sound,
To man klusi čukst šī zeme, to ik akmens saka man,
This the land whispers to me silently, this every stone tells me,
To ik akmens saka man.
This every stone tells me.
Tu tak negribi, lai važās reiz mūs atkal svešnieks kaļ,
You do not want, do You, that a stranger should once again forge us in chains,
Lai mēs, redzējuši Sauli, krītam naktī atpakaļ.
That we, having seen the Sun, should fall back into darkness.
Tu tak negribi, lai atkal latvju tauta ceļos krīt,
You do not want, do You, that the Latvian people should again fall on their knees,
And that those of us, who are free today, should again find ourselves in chains tomorrow.
Tu tak negribi, lai svešā mēlē Tevi lūdzam mēs,
You do not want, do You, that we should pray to You in a foreign tongue,
Tu, kas devis mums šo zemi, Tu, kas esi mūsu tēvs!
You, who gave us this land, You, who are our Father!
Vai nav skaistas mūsu dziesmas?
Are not our songs beautiful?
Nē, nedzied verga sirds!
No, the heart of a slave does not sing thus!
Tāpēc mūžam Tavai Saulei latvjus brīvus jāapmirdz,
Your Sun therefore must forever shine upon Latvians free,
Latvjus brīvus jāapmirdz.
Latvians free it must shine upon.
Tāpēc sargi mūs tais dienās, tornī sargs kad trauksmi sauc.
Therefore protect us in those days when the guard on the tower raises the alarm.
Tad, kad, nāves izkapts nopļauts,
When, the death axe having felled them,
Drauga rokās nomirst draugs.
Friends die in the arms of friends.
When swarms of leaden bees tear at Latvians and sting,
Tad, kad baltu krustu birzis neredzamas rokas cels!
When an unseen hand erects a birch forest of white crosses!
Will this freedom be but a dream on our people’s path,
And after years, will foreign masters again drive us out into servitude?
Nē, tik grūti ir tam ticēt,
No, it is too hard to believe that,
Nē, šī doma sirdī sāp.
No, this thought pains my heart.
Tāpēc lūdzam šajā dienā, Kungs, no sava troņa kāp!
Therefore on this day we pray to You: Lord, descend from Your throne!
Nāc un pārstaigā šo zemi, kamēr vēl Sauli jauš!
Come and walk over this land, while yet it is aware of the Sun!
Come and cast us in stone, so that no one may break us!
Nāc un svētī mūs, un vieno, un mums darba spēku dod,
Come and bless us, and unite us, and give us strength for our work,
Lai reiz liktenīgā stundā negaida mūs briesmīgs sods,
So that when the fateful hour comes, a terrible punishment may not await us,
Negaida mūs briesmīgs sods.
May not await us a terrible punishment.
Šodien, Kungs, mēs tevi lūdzam:
Today, my Lord, we pray to You:
Neļauj latvjiem mirt un zust.
Do not let Latvians die and be lost.
Liec mums vienmēr tavu Sauli brīviem pāri galvai just.
Let us always feel Your Sun free above our heads.
Līdz tiem laikiem, kurus šodien nezin vēl nekur neviens,
Until those times, which today no one anywhere yet knows,
Mūžam brīvs, lai latvju ērglis, savus spārnus sizdams, skrien!
Let the Latvian eagle, forever free, fly with beating wings!
Lai pa nezināmiem laikiem cauri mūžiem ejam mēs,
Through uncharted times, through eternities let us go,
Dod mums spēku, dod mums drosmi,
Give us strength, give us courage,
Dod mums vienprātību, Tēvs!
Give us unity of mind, O Father!
Lai pa nezināmiem laikiem cauri mūžiem ejam mēs,
Through uncharted times, through eternities let us go,
Dod mums spēku, dod mums drosmi,
Give us strength, give us courage,
Dod mums vienprātību, Tēvs!
Give us unity of mind, O Father!
