Der Hund

In Wien, wo die Stadt am verschwiegensten ist
Sitzt oft der Herr Meyer beim Wein
Und um zehn, wenn der Wein am gediegensten ist
Kommt er langsam ins Reden hinein
Und dann sagt er: "I les in der Zeitung
Nur von Rüstung und Kriegsvorbereitung –
Man will jetzt die Welt ausradiern
Und die Weanerstadt atomisiern!
Also bittschön, ich wüll ja nix sogn
Aber ans liegt mir sehr schwer im Mogn:

Wenn jetzt ein Krieg kommt
Sagn's, was gschiecht dann mit mein' Hund?
Mei Hund ist gwiss ka ordinärer Vagabund!
Und wenn die Kugeln plötzlich knolln
Und die Raketen obafolln
Was macht der Hund? Ja Kruzifix
Wenn er auch bellt, das nutzt ihm nix!
Es könnt ja sein, ein General wird leicht varruckt
So dass er ohne z'wolln auf's falsche Knopferl druckt
Dann geht vielleicht die ganze Wölt zugrund –
Das wäre fürchterlich, denn was macht dann mein Hund?

In China, wo jetzt die Chinesen regiern
Do wünschen's sich d'Weanastadt fuat
Das heisst nicht, dass dort nur die Besen regiern
Aber die Guaten san a net sehr guat!
No, und die Russen, die schrein zwar: "Genossen!"
Aber ich will mich auf die net verlossen
Wenn Russland und China zusamm' marschiern
Muss Österreich kapituliern!
Also, ich hab Kommunisten nicht sehr gern
Aber ich würde mich trotzdem nicht ärgern
Nur eines frag ich mich: Was g'schiecht dann mit mein' Hund?
Mein Hund frisst täglich dreißig Deka feinsten Schlund!
Wenn dann ein Russe nebn mir sitzt
Der auf das Hundefutter spitzt
Und es ihm wegnimmt und es frisst
Dann wird mein Hund kein Kommunist!

Am besten is, die Russen bleibn wo's grad stehn
Und die Chinesen bleibn in China, dort is's schen!
Denn so ein Kriag ist doch auf kaan Foll gsund
Mir kann's ja wurscht sein, aber sagn's, was macht mein Hund?"

Ich seh im Grund für einen Hund gar keinen Grund!
Er bellt mich an welch Kompliment!
Er frisst, was ich noch fressen könnt
Und wedelt dann, wie jede Gans
Als Dankbezeugung mit sein' Schwanz!
Er macht ins Zimmer, und dann hupft er in mei Bett
Er gibt brav's Pfoterl, aber drucken tut er's net
Er macht schön "Bitte", doch ich frag: "No und?
Des kann ich sölber, also z'was brauch ic an Hund?"

The Dog

In Vienna, where the city is most discreet
Mr. Meyer often sits with his wine
And at ten, when the wine is most exquisite
He slowly begins to unwind
And then he says: "I read in the paper
Only of armament and war preparation –
They now want to eradicate the world
And atomize the city of Vienna!
So please, I don't want to say anything
But this weighs heavily on my mind:

If war comes now
Tell me, what will happen to my dog?
My dog is certainly no common vagabond!
And when the bullets suddenly start to fall
And the rockets fall from above
What will the dog do? Holy smokes
Even if he barks, it won't do him any good!
It could happen that a general becomes slightly crazy
So that he presses the wrong button without hesitation
Then perhaps the whole world will perish –
That would be terrible, for what will happen to my dog then?

In China, where the Chinese now rule
There, they wish the city of Vienna were wiped out
That doesn't mean that only fools rule there
But the good ones are not very good either!
Well, and the Russians, they certainly shout: "Comrades!"
But I don't want to rely on them
If Russia and China march together
Austria must capitulate!
So, I don't like communists very much
But I still wouldn't be angry
I only wonder: What will happen to my dog then?
My dog eats thirty deca of the finest throat every day!
If a Russian sits next to me
Who eyes the dog food
And takes it away from him and eats it
Then my dog will not become a communist!

It's best if the Russians stay where they are
And the Chinese stay in China, it's beautiful there!
Because a war like this is not healthy for anyone
I don't care, but tell me, what will happen to my dog?"

I see no reason for a dog at all!
He barks at me, what a compliment!
He eats what I could still eat myself
And wags his tail like every goose
In gratitude with his tail!
He makes a mess in the room, and then he jumps into my bed
He gives his paw obediently, but he doesn't press it
He makes nice "Please", but I ask: "So what?
I can do that myself, so why do I need a dog?"
