Но садятся орлы, как магнит, на железную смесь.
Даже стулья плетеные держатся здесь
на болтах и на гайках.
Только рыбы в морях знают цену свободе; но их
немота вынуждает нас как бы к созданью своих
этикеток и касс. И пространство торчит прейскурантом.
Время создано смертью. Нуждаясь в телах и вещах,
свойства тех и других оно ищет в сырых овощах.

Жить в эпоху свершений, имея возвышенный нрав,

обыватель узрит сквозь очки в оловянной оправе,
как лежит человек вниз лицом у кирпичной стены;

времена, неспособные в общей своей слепоте
отличать выпадавших из люлек от выпавших люлек.

For poetry demands words, my dear,
I'm a deaf, balding, sullen envoy, you see,
From a second-rate land entangled with this one,
Unwilling to rape my own brain,
I dress myself and descend to the kiosk
For the evening paper.
Wind drives the leaves. Dim glow of old bulbs
In these sad lands, where mirrors claim victory,
With puddles' aid, create an illusion of plenty.
Even thieves scratch amalgam, stealing oranges.
Though the feeling you have when you look at yourself,
That feeling I've forgotten.
In these sad lands, all is designed for winter: dreams,
Prison walls, coats; brides' toilets – a whiteness
Of New Year's Eve, drinks, second hands ticking.
Sparrow-like sweaters and dirt by the number of alkalis;
Puritan morals. Underwear. And in violinists' hands –
Wooden hot water bottles.
This land is immobile. Imagining the gross volume
Of cast iron and lead, you shake your head in a daze,
Recalling the former power on bayonets and Cossack whips.
But eagles, like magnets, land on the iron mix.
Even wicker chairs here are held
By bolts and nuts.
Only fish in the seas know the price of freedom; but their
