Ae dil-nashīñ talāsh terī kū-ba-kū na thī
Apne se ik farār thā vo justujū na thi

Izhār nā-rasā sahī vo sūrat-e-jamāl
Āaina-e-ḳhayāl meñ bhī hū-ba-hū na thī

Kyā sehr thā ki hañste hue jaan de gae
Vo bhī ki jin ko tāb-e-ġham-e-ārzū na thī

Kyā jaane ahl-e-bazm ne kyā kyā samajh liyā
Iḳhfā-e-ārzū thī vo chup guftugū na thī

Vo kaun sī sahar thī ki roī na phuul phuul
Vo shaam kaun sī thī ki ġham se lahū na thī

Ham to farefta the 'ziyā' dil kī aañch par
Manzūr mahz dilkashī-e-rañg-o-bū na thī

Oh Heart's Desire

Oh heart's desire, my search for thee was not alley by alley
I was fleeing from myself, not seeking thee

A mute declaration, that face of beauty
Not exactly reflected in the mirror of imagination

What magic was it that they surrendered their lives laughing
Even those who could not endure the fire of desire

Who knows what the people in the assembly thought
It was a concealment of desire, not a silent conversation

In which city did not the flowers weep
In which evening was there not blood from sorrow

I was deceived by the 'light' on the hearth of the heart
The charm of colour and fragrance was not acceptable
