Ich kam von meinem Wege ab,
weil es so nebeldunstig war.
Der Wald war feuchtkalt wie ein Grab,
und Finger griffen in mein Haar.
Ein Vogel rief so hoch und hohl
Wie wenn ein Kind im Schlummer klagt –
Und ich stand still – ich wusste wohl,
was man von diesem Walde sagt!
Dann setzt ich wieder Bein vor Bein
Und komme so gemach vom Fleck,
und quutsch' im letzten Abendschein
schwer vorwärts durch Morast und Dreck.
Es nebelte, es nieselte,
es roch nach Schlamm, verfault und nass,
es raschelte, es rieselte
und kroch und sprang im hohen Gras.
Auf einmal, eh ich's mich versehn,
bin ich am Strom, im Wasser schier.
Am Rand bleib ich erschrocken stehn,
fast netzt die Flut die Sole mir.
Das Röhricht zieht sich bis zum Tann
Und wiegt und wogt so weit man blickt,
und flüstert böse ab und an,
wenn es im feuchten Windhauch nickt.
Da saß ein Kerl! Weiß Gott, mein Herz
Stand still als ich ihn sitzen sah!
Ich sah ihn nur von hinterwärts,
und er saß klein und ruhig da,
saß in der Nebeldämmerung,
die Angelrute ausgestreckt,
als ob ein toter Weidenstrunk
den dürren Ast gespenstig reckt.
"He, Alter!" ruf ich, "beißt es gut?"
Und sieh, der Baumstamm dreht sich um
Und wackelt mit dem runden Hut
Und grinst mit spitzen Zähnen stumm.
Und spricht – doch nicht nach Landesart,
wie Entenschnattern, schnell und breit
kommt's aus dem algengrünen Bart:
"Wenn's regnet, hab' ich gute Zeit!"
"So scheint es", sag ich und ich schau
in seinen Bottich neben ihm.
Da wimmelt's blank und silbergrau
Und müht sich mit zerfetzten Kiem,
Aale, die Flossen zahrt wie flaum,
glotzäugig Karpfen mittendrin –
ich traue meinen Augen kaum! –
wälzt eine Natter sich darin.
"Ein seltenes Fischlein, Alter, traun!"
Da springt er forsch behebend empor:
"Die Knorpel sind so gut zu kau'n!"
Schnattert er listig mir ins Ohr.
"Gewiss seit ihr zur Nacht mein Gast!
Wo wollt ihr heute auch noch hin?
Nur zu, den Bottich angefasst,
genug ist für uns beide drin!"
Und richtig watschelt er vorauf,
patsch, patsch, am Uferrand entlang.
Und wie im Traume heb ich auf
Und schleppe hinterdrein den Fang.
Und krieche durch den Weidenhang,
der eng den Rasenhang umschmiegt,
wo, tief verborgen selbst am Tag,
die schilfgebaute Hütte liegt.
Da drinnen ist nicht Stuhl, nicht Tisch,
der Alte sitzt am Boden platt,
es riecht nach Aas und totem Fisch –
ich wird vom bloßen Atmen satt.
Er aber greift frisch in den Topf
Und frisst die Fische kalt und roh,
packt sie am Schwanz, beißt ab den Kopf
und knirscht und schmatzt im dunkeln froh.
"Ihr esst ja nicht, das ist nicht recht!"
Die Schwimmhand klatscht mich fett aufs Knie.
"Ihr seid vom Trockenen Geschlecht,
ich weiß, die Kerle essen nie.
Ihr seid bekümmert, sprecht doch aus,
womit ich euch erfreuen kann?"
"Ja", klappre ich: "ich will nach Haus
aus dem verfluchten Schnatermann!"*
Da hebt der Kerl ein Lachen an,
es klang nicht gut, mir wurde kalt.
"Was weißt denn Ihr vom Schnatermann?"
"Ja", sag ich stur, "so heißt der Wald!"
"So heißt der Wald?" nun geht es los,
er grinst mich grün und phosphorn an:
"Du dürrer Narr, was weißt du bloß
vom Schnater-Schnater-Schnatermann?!"
Und schnater-schnater, klitsch und klatsch,
der Regen peitscht mir ins Gesicht.
Quatsch durch den Sumpf, hoch spritzt der Matsch,
ein Stiefel fehlt – ich acht' es nicht.
Und schnater-schnater um mich her,
und Enten-Unken-Froschgetön,
Möwengelächter irr und leer
Und tief ein hohles Windgestöhn ...
Des andren Tags saß ich allein,
nicht weit vom prasselnden Kamin,
und lies mein schwer gekränkt gebein
wohlig vom heißen Grog durchziehen.
Wie golden war der Trank, wie klar!
Wie edel war sein starker Duft!
Ich blickte nach dem Wald – es war
Noch sehr viel Regen in der Luft.

I strayed from my path, my dear,
The fog was thick, the air unclear.
The forest, damp and cold as a grave,
And fingers brushed against my hair, I crave.
A bird called out, so high and hollow,
Like a child's whimper in its sleep, follow?
And I stood still, for well I knew,
The tales they told, of this forest true.
Then step by step, I walked once more,
Slowly moving, as before.
And squelched in the fading light of day,
Through mud and muck, I made my way.
The mist descended, drizzle fell,
The scent of mud, decaying, a spell.
It rustled, dripped, a whispering sound,
Creatures crawled and leaped around.
Suddenly, before I knew,
By the river's edge, the water drew.
Startled, I stopped upon the bank,
The rising tide almost made me sank.
The reeds stretched out to distant fir,
Swaying and waving, far and near.
And whispering with malice now and then,
As they bowed in the damp wind's den.
There sat a man! God knows, my heart,
Stood still when I saw him take his part.
I only saw him from behind,
Small and quiet, of his kind.
He sat in the misty twilight's embrace,
His fishing rod, in its place.
Like a dead willow trunk, so bare,
Stretching its withered branch in the air.
"Hey, old man!" I called, "Are the fish biting well?"
And look, the tree trunk turned to tell.
He wobbled his round hat with a grin,
And his pointed teeth showed from within.
And spoke - but not in our land's tongue,
Like ducks quacking, fast and long.
It came from his algae-green beard's lair:
"When it rains, I have time to spare!"
"So it seems," I said, and I did see,
Into the bucket beside his knee.
There it teemed, silver and bright,
Struggling with torn gills, what a sight!
Eels with fins as delicate as down,
Goggle-eyed carp, swimming around.
I could hardly believe my eyes! -
A water snake, in disguise.
"A rare fish, old man, I swear!"
He jumped up, boldly in the air:
"The cartilage is so good to chew!"
He chattered slyly, it's true.
"Surely you'll be my guest tonight!
Where else would you go, in this plight?
Come on, grab the bucket, don't delay,
There's plenty for both of us, hooray!"
And indeed, he waddled on ahead,
Splash, splash, along the riverbed.
And as if in a dream, I did comply,
Dragging the catch, with a sigh.
And crawled through the willow's embrace,
That tightly hugged the grassy space.
Where, hidden deep, even in the day,
The reed-built hut, where we lay.
Inside, there was no chair, no table,
The old man sat on the floor, quite able.
The smell of carrion and dead fish filled the air,
I felt full just from breathing there.
But he reached into the pot with glee,
And ate the fish, cold and raw, you see.
He grabbed them by the tail, bit off the head,
And crunched and smacked, in the darkness, he fed.
"You're not eating, that's not right!"
His wet hand slapped my knee with all his might.
"You're from the dry land folk, I know,
Those guys never eat, it's always slow.
You seem troubled, speak your mind,
What can I do, to make you kind?"
"Yes," I clattered, "I want to go home,
Out of this cursed Schnatermann's dome!"*
The man let out a laugh so cold,
It didn't sound good, I felt quite old.
"What do you know of the Schnatermann?"
"Well," I said stubbornly, "that's the forest's plan!"
"That's the forest's name?" he began,
He grinned at me, green and phosphorescent, man:
"You dry fool, what do you know,
Of the Schnater-Schnater-Schnatermann, yo?!"
And schnater-schnater, squish and splash,
The rain whipped against my face, a dash.
Squashing through the swamp, mud spraying high,
A boot was missing, but I didn't cry.
And schnater-schnater all around,
Ducks, toads, and frogs made their sound.
Seagulls' laughter, eerie and stark,
And deep within, a hollow wind's remark ...
The next day, I sat alone, my dear,
Not far from the crackling fireplace, it's clear.
And let my aching limbs find ease,
Warmed by the hot grog, a gentle breeze.
How golden was the drink, how bright!
How noble was its strong, sweet light!
I gazed towards the forest - it was true,
There was still much rain, in the air so blue.
