When we are in the tavern,
We don't care what the earth is,
But we hurry to the game,
To which we always sweat.
What happens in the tavern
Where money is the butler,
This is the work that should be sought;
If I speak, let it be heard.

Some play,
Some drink,
Some live indiscreetly.
But those who linger in the game,
Some of them are stripped naked,
Some are clothed there,
Some are clothed in sacks;
There no one fears death,
But for Bacchus they cast lots.

First for the money of wine;
From this the libertines drink;
They drink once for the captives,
After that they drink three times for the living,
Four times for all Christians,
Five times for the faithful dead,
Six times for the vain sisters,
Seven times for the woodland soldiers.
Eight times for the perverse brothers,
Nine times for the dispersed monks,
Ten times for the sailors,
Eleven times for the discordant,
Twelve times for the penitents,
Thirteen times for those who are traveling.

Both for the pope and for the king
They all drink without law.
The mistress drinks, the master drinks,
The soldier drinks, the clergy drinks,
He drinks, she drinks,
The servant drinks with the maid,
The swift drinks, the slow drinks,
The white drinks, the black drinks,
The constant drinks, the vagrant drinks,
The rude drinks, the magician drinks,
The poor and sick drink,
The exile and the unknown drink,
The child drinks, the old man drinks,
The bishop drinks and the dean,
The sister drinks, the brother drinks,

Six hundred coins are not enough
They last when they drink immoderately
They all drink without end,
Although they drink with a happy mind;
Thus all the peoples gnaw at us,
And thus we will be poor.
