En una esquina un escrito rezaba así:
"El último que salga que apague la luz,
Que no pueda nadie mirar, donde está,
Al país del que le hablamos".
Entre las ruínas un viejo se queda allí
Con su gran dolor, sin una lagrima ya,
Porque ya las ha llorado
En su corazón ahogado.
"Yo de aquí no puedo irme" -nos decía-
"Pues mis pies están cansados y, además
Esta tierra es nuestra tierra, mírala.
El cerezo lo he plantado con mis manos
Y en un mes o dos florecerá
Como un signo de esperanza renacerá.
Y al seguir el paso de mil huellas,
Se me encoge el corazón porque
No puedo ver como se marchan
Tantos amigos, tantos testigos
Que callarán.
Hasta las aves, cuando amanezca,
Alzando el vuelo, emigrarán
Lejos de esta mala suerte,
De este invierno, de esta muerte
Que otro frío nos traerá".
Cómo se marchan todas las cosas,
Las bellas esposas, cómo se marchan.
¿Hacia dónde? Quién sabrá.
¿Qué caminos andarán antes de poder parar?
Y sobre el muro queda escrito
Aquello que dice así:

Que camine hasta encontrar
Otro tiempo, otra esperanza
Por la humanidad"

In a corner a sign read:
'The last one to leave, turn off the light,
So that no one can see where
The country we're talking about is.'
Amidst the ruins an old man remains there,
With his great sorrow, without a tear,
Because he has already cried them
In his drowned heart.
'I cannot leave here' - he told us -
'Because my feet are tired and, besides,
This land is our land, look at it.
I planted the cherry tree with my own hands
And in a month or two it will bloom
As a sign of hope, it will be reborn.
And as I follow the steps of a thousand footprints,
My heart sinks because
I can't see how they leave
So many friends, so many witnesses,
Who will be silenced.
Even the birds, when dawn breaks,
Taking flight, will migrate
Far from this bad luck,
From this winter, from this death,
That another cold will bring us.'
How all things leave
Beautiful wives, how they leave.
To where? Who knows.
What paths will they walk before they can stop?
And on the wall remains written
What it says like this:
