And foolishly preferred it to stay on.

It was one early morning that the old man Valgren took,
And led him out of his stable,
And what would become,
The horse suspected well,
When the old man tied it to a pine.
And that he was intoxicated was equally plain:
I wonder, the horse thought, dull,
How this will turn out,
Best take it easy in any case.

But the old man Valgren had a couple of drinks more,
To be fortified in body and soul,
And then he told the horse:
Be kind and stand still,
For you see, I only wish you well.
He cupped his hand over his eye,
And then grabbed his sledgehammer,
And struck the horse on the head.
So the horse collapsed and died.

But then the old man was sad, and fetched an armful of hay,
To put under the head of his friend.
Then he went into the cottage,
And said: Now he is dead,
And started to drink again.
He wanted to drown his sorrow, and swallow back his tears,
-But when he came out again,
There stood the horse and ate,
And munched as always, calm and slow.
