Meno male che c'è il palazzo
Se uno avesse la fortuna
Di visitare il palazzo come fosse un museo
E le stanze del presidente e degli onorevoli
Avrebbe la possibilità di amare di più il proprio paese
I bellissimi saloni, i tappeti, la finezza degli affreschi, degli stucchi
La luce che pende discreta da preziosissime gocce
E che avvolge nel semibuio le persone e le cose
Che col tempo si rassomigliano sempre di più
Monocoli, palpebre, fronti pelate, frasi, sorrisi
Vecchie seggiole, realismo, firme, strette di mano
Tutto si rassomiglia nel semibuio, nel bazar del tempo, nel palazzo
Qualche volta qualcuno esce, ma in punta di piedi, senza fare scandalo
E qualche volta si annuncia anche il decesso di un amico onorevole
Con un'indifferenza di buon tono, non si capisce perché
Ma sembra sempre che siano le cinque del pomeriggio
E che fra poco ci offriranno una tazza di tè

Thank goodness for the palace
If one were fortunate enough
To visit the palace as if it were a museum
And the rooms of the president and the honorable members
One would have the opportunity to love one's country more
The beautiful halls, the carpets, the finesse of the frescoes, the stuccoes
The light that hangs discreetly from precious drops
And that envelops people and things in semi-darkness
That over time have come to resemble each other more and more
Monocles, eyelids, bald foreheads, phrases, smiles
Old chairs, realism, signatures, handshakes
Everything looks the same in the semi-darkness, in the bazaar of time, in the palace
Sometimes someone leaves, but they do so on tiptoe, without causing a fuss
And sometimes the death of an honorable friend is announced
With an indifference of good taste, one does not understand why
But it always seems to be five o'clock in the afternoon
And that soon we will be offered a cup of tea
