Fair-haired boys with feathers upon their heads

Slowly, like timid and strange little beasts,
Still weary, not yet free from the slumber's hold,
They fumble for pots and open doors, at least,
Tangled in nightshirts, like a father's embrace of old.
Quiet games, played near the sleeping forms,
Every morning, while even the mice slumber deep.
The boys know they must hurry before the storms,
And so they move as quietly as they can keep.
They listen to whispers and creaks in the distant rooms' hush,
They're scared and they want to cry, to sob without end,
They long, with a hurtful ache, to escape from this plush,
A strange, little shame that they can't comprehend.
While the grown-ups sleep in their restless beds,
Unaware of the children in their snowy white attire,
Their darling children find mischievous threads,
And their music won't wake those who slumber in the mire.
