Вот поднялся Вяйнемёйнен,
Стал ногами на прибрежье,
На омытый морем остров,
На равнину без деревьев.
Много лет затем он прожил,
Год за годом проживал он
Там, на острове безлюдном,
На равнине без деревьев.

Увидал он рост деревьев,
Их побегов рост веселый;
Только дуб взойти не может,
Божье дерево не всходит.
Дал упрямцу он свободу -
Пусть свое узнает счастье!
Ждет затем подряд три ночи,
Столько ж дней он ожидает.

Дуб развесистый, огромный,
Дал широких веток много,
Веток с зеленью густою,
До небес вершину поднял,
Широко раскинул ветви -
Облакам бежать мешает,
Не дает проходу тучам,
Закрывает в небе солнце!

Старый, верный Вяйнемёйнен
Так подумал, да размыслил -
Кто бы с силою собрался,
Чтобы дуб свалить ветвистый?
Жизнь людей идет печально,
Плавать рыбе неудобно,
Если солнце не блистает,
Не сияет месяц ясный!

Arose then Wäinämöinen,
Stepped with heavy feet upon the shore,
Upon the sea-encircled island,
Upon the open meadow-land.
Long he wandered through the forest,
Long he wandered through the woodland;
In that lonely island tarried,
In that solitary meadow-land.

Saw the growth of mighty forests,
Saw the shoots of saplings springing;
But the oak alone was wanting,
Would not rise the tree of heaven.
So he gave the stubborn oakling -
Let its fate at last be tested!
Night and day he watched and waited,
Seven days and nights unwearied.

Rose the oak with branches spreading,
Sent its broad limbs through the forest.
Leaves of thickest green extended,
Reached unto the clouds of heaven,
Stretched its arms across the forest -
Hinders clouds from flying over,
Hinders winds from blowing freely,
Hides the sunshine from the forest!

Old and faithful Wäinämöinen
Thought and pondered for a season -
Who would now be found so mighty,
Who would fell this tree pretentious?
Sad the plight of hapless mortals,
Hard their task of hunting fishes,
All the sunlight intercepted,
All the moonlight hid from mortals!
