В лесной глуши, во тьме, безлунной ночью
Скитался парень, волновался, спички жег.
И тишиной зловещей лес ему пророчил,
Его судьбы весьма безрадостный итог.
И каждый куст свирепым хищником казался.
Скрипели ветки у него над головой.
Перед землянкой он внезапно оказался,
До боли напрягая взгляд плененный тьмой.
От радости он в дверь ударил головою
И жалобно стонал: Я целый день в лесу
Блуждаю будто зверь, того гляди завою
Пустите, а не то, землянку разнесу!
Но с кучей хвороста на узенькой спине,
Из чащи вышел дед, заросший волосами.
И в тот же миг он очутился на сосне,
За ветки бородой цепляясь и усами.
И парень сделал шаг назад и оступился.
Упал и покатился кубарем в овраг,
На самом дне средь мухоморов очутился
И голова кружилась, черти знает как.
От радости он в дверь ударил головою
И жалобно стонал: Я целый день в лесу
Блуждаю будто зверь, того гляди завою
Пустите, а не то, землянку разнесу!
Ах, виноват, бродяга, ты передо мною,
В моем родном лесу меня ты напугал!
Занес кулак у парня дед над головою:
Таких я отродясь нахалов не видал!
Я не согласен дед с тобою, тем мы квиты,
Что испугав тебя - я сам упал в овраг!
Иди ты к лешему! - воскликнул он сердито.
И леший понял - этот парень не дурак.
От радости он в дверь ударил головою
И жалобно стонал: Я целый день в лесу
Блуждаю будто зверь, того гляди завою
Пустите, а не то, землянку разнесу!

The Guy and the Leshy

In the forest's depths, in darkness, on a moonless night,
A guy wandered, worried, striking matches alight.
And the ominous silence of the woods foretold,
A rather joyless ending to his story to be told.
Every bush seemed a ferocious beast in disguise.
Branches creaked above him, scraping the skies.
He suddenly found himself before a small hut,
Straining his eyes, captivated by the darkness, he was stuck.
With joy, he banged his head against the door with a shout,
And moaned pitifully: "All day in the woods I've been,
Wandering like a beast, about to howl within,
Let me in, or I'll tear this hut down, I'm not bluffin'!"
But with a pile of brushwood on his narrow back,
An old man emerged from the thicket, hair like a tangled track.
And in that same moment, he found himself up a pine,
His beard and mustache clinging to the branches, intertwined.
The guy took a step back and stumbled with fright,
He fell and tumbled head over heels into the night,
Landing amongst fly agarics at the very bottom's core,
His head spinning wildly, like never before.
With joy, he banged his head against the door with a shout,
And moaned pitifully: "All day in the woods I've been,
Wandering like a beast, about to howl within,
Let me in, or I'll tear this hut down, I'm not bluffin'!"
"Ah, you're at fault, wanderer, standing before me,
In my native forest, you frightened me, you see!"
The old man raised his fist above the guy's head in a rage,
"Never in my life have I seen such a brazen page!"
"I disagree, old man, we're even, that's the deal,
For scaring you, I fell into the ravine, I feel!"
"Go to the Leshy!" he exclaimed with angry might.
And the Leshy understood - this guy wasn't a simpleton, quite bright.
With joy, he banged his head against the door with a shout,
And moaned pitifully: "All day in the woods I've been,
Wandering like a beast, about to howl within,
Let me in, or I'll tear this hut down, I'm not bluffin'!"
