הניצב על החוף כה בודד?
התדעו, חבריה, לספר, בגלל מה

דעכה כמו הנר שכבה.
ומאז ריק הצריף הרעוע,
רק שחפים בו צורחים ביגון
אך בליל סערה, עת הרוח קרה,
אור של נר מהבהב בחלון...

The Little Hut

Do you know the dilapidated shack
That stands so lonely on the shore?
Can you tell me, my friend, why
It stands so abandoned and sad?
No foot has stepped in it for years,
Only seagulls gather in the storm
But they say that long ago, in the little shack
Lived a sailor and a girl with him.
They lived in joy and happiness,
The moon lit up their nights,
And the sun shone on a girl and a sailor -
Until the sea called him again.
He said: "Every night, light a candle
And place it in the window,
And when I return and see the light
I will know: you are in the little shack!"
He sailed away in a ship to the horizon,
The girl waits endlessly
And in the lonely shack, as evening falls,
A small candle flickers in the window.
So the years passed in hope,
Until on a rainy and stormy night
The girl fell asleep, the candle beside her -
And the wind extinguished the candle!
On that very night a ship approached
And on it stood the sailor:
But in vain he looks,
For there is no light there in the shack,
He returned to the sea and went away.
Some say: he found another,
Some say: he drowned in the depths
The girl on the shore still waited and finally
Faded away like the extinguished candle.
And since then the dilapidated hut is empty,
Only seagulls scream in sorrow
But on a stormy night, when the wind is cold,
The light of a candle flickers in the window...
