Imagination

It's interesting that some people find science so easy
And others find it kind of dull and difficult
Especially kids
You know some of them you know are just eat it up
And I don't know why it is
It's the same perhaps for
For instance, lots of people love music
And I never could carry a tune
I lose a great deal of pleasure out of that
And I think people lose a lot of pleasure
Who find science dull
In the case of science
I think that one of thе things that make it very difficult

Nothing is really as it seems
We're used to get hot and cold, and all that hot and cold is
Is the speeds that the atoms are jiggling
If they jiggle more it corresponds
To hotter and colder is jiggling less
So, if you have a cup of coffee
Or something sitting on a table
And the atoms are jiggling a great deal in the cup
And they bounce against the cup, then the cup then gets shaky
And the atoms in the cup shake
And they bounce against the source and the heat
Heats the cup and heats everything else
Hot thing spreads its heat into other things by mere contact
Because the atoms that are jiggling a lot in the hot thing
Shake the ones that are jiggling only a little bit
In the cold thing, so that the heat we say goes into the cold thing
It spreads
But what's spreading is just jiggling, and irregular motions
Which is easy... to kind of understand

And if you're used to balls bouncing
You know they slow up and stop after a while
But we have to imagine with the atoms a perfect elasticity
They never lose any energy
Every time they bounce, they keep on bouncing
They're perpetually moving
And that the things that are happening when
We say something loses energy
If a ball comes down and bounces
It shakes irregularly some of the atoms in the floor
And then when it comes up again
It leaves some of those atoms moving, jiggling
So, as it bounces, it's passing its extra energies
It's extra motions to little patches on the floor
Each time it bounces, and loses a little each time
Until it settles down, we say as the falling motion stops
But what's left is the floor is shaking more than it was before
And the atoms in the ball
Are shaking more than they were before
That the organized motion of all these atoms is moving
The same way falling down and the quiet floor
Is now transformed into a ball sitting on the ground
But all that motion is still there in a form
In the form of the jiggling of the floor
Which is a little bit warmer
But anybody who's hammered a great deal on something
Knows that it's true, that if you pound something
You can feel the temperature difference, it heats up
It heats up something because you're jiggling

I find myself trying to imagine all kinds of things all the time
And I get a kick out of it just like a runner
Gets a kick out of sweating
I get a kick out of thinking about these things
I can't stop, I mean I could talk forever

Je passe à côté de beaucoup de plaisir à cause de ça

Ceux qui trouvent la science ennuyeuse
Dans le cas de la science
Je pense que l'une des choses qui la rendent très difficile

On est habitué au chaud et au froid, et tout ce que le chaud et le froid sont
C'est la vitesse à laquelle les atomes vibrent
S'ils vibrent plus, ça correspond
À plus chaud et plus froid, c'est vibrer moins
Donc, si tu as une tasse de café
Ou quelque chose posé sur une table
Et que les atomes vibrent beaucoup dans la tasse
Et qu'ils rebondissent contre la tasse, alors la tasse se met à trembler
Et les atomes dans la tasse tremblent
Et ils rebondissent contre la source et la chaleur
Chauffe la tasse et chauffe tout le reste
Une chose chaude propage sa chaleur aux autres choses par simple contact
Parce que les atomes qui vibrent beaucoup dans la chose chaude
Secouent ceux qui ne vibrent qu'un peu
Dans la chose froide, donc on dit que la chaleur va dans la chose froide
Elle se propage
Mais ce qui se propage, ce ne sont que des vibrations, et des mouvements irréguliers
Ce qui est facile... à comprendre en quelque sorte

Ils sont perpétuellement en mouvement
Et que les choses qui se passent quand
On dit que quelque chose perd de l'énergie
Si une balle tombe et rebondit
Elle secoue irrégulièrement certains atomes du sol
Et puis quand elle remonte
Elle laisse certains de ces atomes en mouvement, en train de vibrer
Donc, en rebondissant, elle transmet ses énergies supplémentaires
Ses mouvements supplémentaires à de petites zones sur le sol
À chaque fois qu'elle rebondit, et en perd un peu à chaque fois
Jusqu'à ce qu'elle se stabilise, on dit que le mouvement de chute s'arrête
Mais ce qui reste, c'est que le sol tremble plus qu'avant
Et les atomes dans la balle
Tremblent plus qu'avant
Que le mouvement organisé de tous ces atomes est en train de bouger
De la même manière en tombant et le sol immobile
Est maintenant transformé en une balle posée sur le sol
Mais tout ce mouvement est encore là sous une forme
Sous la forme de la vibration du sol
Qui est un peu plus chaud
Mais quiconque a beaucoup martelé sur quelque chose
Sait que c'est vrai, que si tu frappes quelque chose
Tu peux sentir la différence de température, ça chauffe
Ça chauffe quelque chose parce que tu fais vibrer

Et je prends mon pied avec ça, tout comme un coureur
Prend son pied à transpirer
Je prends mon pied à penser à ces choses
Je ne peux pas m'arrêter, je veux dire que je pourrais parler éternellement
