Lyrics and translation Alf Prøysen - Romjulsdrøm

Romjulsdrøm
Christmas Dream
I wish I was four years old at Christmas
And I knew a girl who was almost five,
And we would both get dressed up in masks
Og kømmi julbokk tel et bæssmorhem.
And visit an elderly woman as Christmas goats.
Og klokka skulle vara midt dagen
And the clock should be in the middle of the day
Og vægen skulle vara lett og gå,
And the road should be light and easy to walk,
Og æille bikkjer skulle vara inne
And all the dogs should be inside
Og æille biler skulle bære stå.
And all the cars should simply stand.
Og viss ein møtte onger etter væga
And if we met some children along the way
Som gjorde nar og ville vara med,
Who made fun of us and wanted to join in,
sku en hatt en bror i femte klassen
Then I would have had a brother in fifth grade
Som rødde væg folk fekk i fred.
Who would clear the way so people could walk in peace.
Og bæssmorhuset skulle mæssom såvå
And the elderly woman's house should be so quiet
Og bak gardina skulle ingen sjå
And no one should be watching behind the curtains
-Før vi fekk stiltre øs i gangen
-Before we tiptoed into the hall
Og feste maska før vi banke på.
And put on our masks before we knocked.
sku vi klampe inn høge hæler
Then we would stomp in on high heels
Og kvinke julbokkmål: "Godkvell, godkvell".
And bleat like Christmas goats: "Good evening, good evening."
Og djupt i stolen sku a bæssmor svara:
And deep in her chair, the elderly woman would answer:
kom det julbokk åt en stakkar lell!"
So a poor old woman got a visit from Christmas goats!"
I wish I was four years old at Christmas
Da julelysa brente dagen lang
When the Christmas lights burned all day long,
-When the world was a house with four walls,
Og saligheta var et bessmorfang.
And happiness was a grandmother's hug.
