Pourquoi mon Dieu, mon âme a-t-elle été abandonnée, et ne veut-il pas me sourire ?
Ainsi David s'est-il exprimé autrefois dans l'angoisse, et ainsi notre Seigneur mourant.
Oh, c'est ton plus grand plaisir de demeurer au milieu de tes saints qui te louent.
Et pourtant tu nous entends gémir ainsi, et tu as pitié de nos plaintes.

Nos pères ont eu confiance en ton nom, et ont trouvé une grande délivrance.
Mais il est un ver méprisé des hommes, qui le piétine.
Les hommes secouent la tête et passent à côté de lui, et se moquent de son âme.
« En vain se confie-t-il en Dieu », crient-ils, négligé et désespéré.

Mais tu es celui qui a formé sa chair par ta propre parole puissante.
Et depuis qu'il a été porté sur la poitrine, son espérance était dans le Seigneur.
Pourquoi son père cacherait-il son visage alors que les ennemis le menacent de tous côtés ?
Dans son heure sombre de profonde détresse, et qu'il ne trouve pas d'aide.

Car la joie, l'enfer et les peines se rencontrent pour multiplier la douleur.
Ils clouent ses mains, ils percent ses pieds et se moquent encore de lui.

Pourtant, si ta main souveraine libérait une fureur sur la terre et l'enfer.

Notre sauveur a crié avec la douleur de David :« Dans les gémissements, je gaspille mon souffle. »
« Ta main m'a abaissé sous la poussière amère de la mort ».
Et puis il a rendu son esprit pour le confier entre tes mains.
Sa chair mourante s'est reposée dans l'espoir, pour ressusciter à ton commandement.
