Farewell (Sonnet 87)

Farewell, thou art too dear for my possessing,
And like enough thou know'st thy estimate.
The charter of thy worth gives thee releasing;
My bonds in thee are all determinate.
For how do I hold thee but by thy granting,
And for that riches where is my deserving?
The cause of this fair gift in me is wanting,
And so my patent back again is swerving.
Thyself thou gav'st, thy own worth then not knowing,
Or me, to whom thou gav'st it, else mistaking;
So thy great gift, upon misprision growing,
Comes home again, on better judgment making.
Thus have I had thee as a dream doth flatter:
In sleep a king, but waking no such matter.

Adieu, tu es trop chère pour que je te possède,
Et tu sais assez ta propre valeur.
Le brevet de ta valeur te libère ;
Mes liens en toi sont tous déterminés.
Car comment te tiens-je sinon par ta concession,
Et pour cette richesse, où est mon mérite ?
La cause de ce beau don en moi fait défaut,
Et ainsi mon brevet revient en arrière.
Tu te donnas toi-même, ne connaissant pas alors ta propre valeur,
Ou moi, à qui tu la donnas, te trompant sinon ;
Ainsi ton grand don, fondé sur une erreur de jugement,
Retourne à la maison, sur un jugement plus éclairé.
Ainsi t'ai-je eue comme un rêve flatteur :
En sommeil un roi, mais au réveil, plus rien de tel.
