Letzte Nacht stand ich schweigend unter einer Straßenlaterne
An derselben Ecke, zurück in dieser alten Nachbarschaft
Als ich auf die Häuser blickte, unverändert durch die Jahre

Aber die Bande hielt zusammen, im Streit oder im Spaß
-Und dann kam der Krieg- die Menschenmengen auf der Straße

War die erste Bande, die auf die Hindenburglinie traf.

Aber der Krieg ist vorbei und letzte Nacht, als ich stand
An derselben Ecke, zurück in dieser alten Nachbarschaft
Konnte ich nicht umhin, mir eine Träne aus dem Auge zu wischen
Denn ich kannte kein Gesicht in der Menge, die vorbeiging
