The first thing I can remember
Is the 7th of May 1945

I was servin' me time to be

Then I got a job selling lambs balls to mushroom farmers
That couldn't afford horseshite
One day I was walkin' across the Curragh of Kildare
And I fell into an officer's mess
I ended up in the F.C.A.
Squarebashin' around the wet canteen
Until the commanding officer heard
That me Granny once confessed
To a fellow whose Sister's brother in law was
Married to a man whose first cousin used to fill
Hot water bottles for Patrick Sarsfield before the Battle of Clongorey
I had to go on the run.

So I let on I was a white South African
And I tried to join the British Army to better myself

That's how I met up with The Roseof Tralee

Moi et la Rose

Écoute un peu,
et je te raconterai l'histoire
de comment je suis tombé amoureux de la Rose de Tralee.

Il était environ cinq heures du matin,
je venais juste de descendre du bateau postal.
Je marchais sur North Wall,
m'occupant de mes affaires,
ma valise sous le bras,
m'asseyant chaque minute,
quand une voix derrière moi a dit :
« Bonjour, bonjour, bonjour,
où penses-tu aller
à cette heure matinale ?»

Je me suis retourné
et qui crois-tu que j'ai vu derrière moi ?
La Rose de Tralee, rien que ça !
Et elle portait un magnifique uniforme bleu de la Garda.
J'ai pensé qu'elle était super.
« Comment ça va, Rose ?»
« Bon sang, la dernière fois que je t'ai vue,
c'était là-bas, au Dôme,
sous la tente avec Gaybo en collants Pretty Polly
et toutes ces reines de beauté de
Tachkent, Istanbul, Bangkok, Liverpool et... »
« Comment ça se passe, Rose ?... »
« Peux-tu justifier tes déplacements ?» me dit-elle.
« Ah Rose, pas besoin d'être comme ça,
je peux te donner tous les déplacements que tu veux.
Tu ferais mieux de préparer ton crayon,
tu vas être occupée, petite !»
Christy a une mémoire d'éléphant.
Je me souviens même de choses qui ne se sont jamais produites.

La première chose dont je me souviens,
c'est le 7 mai 1945,
au fond du vallon de Donnelly.
La veille au soir,
Pa Connolly a conduit le camion Roadstone
dans les Sept Sources,
et Sainte Brigitte a commencé à dérouler le Tintawn
sur le Curragh de Kildare.
Puis je me suis réveillé un matin,
après avoir été enrôlé de force chez les enfants de chœur.
Je faisais sonner les cloches et j'agitais l'encensoir.
L'odeur de l'encens
vous rappellerait l'intérieur d'une tente arabe,
et aucune trace de Kadhafi nulle part
à cette époque-là. À Newbridge, dans le comté de Kildare,
un enfant de chœur recevait une livre pour un enterrement,
deux livres pour un mariage,
et un bon coup de pied au cul
s'il ne mettait pas assez de vin dans le calice à la messe matinale.
« Ah ! "Ita Missa Est" » dit Rose.
« "Gloria Tibi Domine" » dis-je.
Je ne savais pas qu'il fallait parler latin
pour entrer à Templemore.
J'aime entendre un peu de latin,
le vieux latin tridentin.
« Kyrie Eleison ».
Je ne supporte pas ces messes folkloriques,
avec tous ces prêtres branchés qui se bousculent
pour chanter des chansons à la mi-temps du loto.
Les neuf premiers vendredis n'ont jamais tué personne.

Eh bien, la chose suivante que je sais, Rose,
c'est que je faisais mon temps
comme voyou au camp de Curragh.
J'essayais d'apprendre aux moutons à parler irlandais.
Puis j'ai trouvé un emploi de vendeur de testicules d'agneaux aux cultivateurs de champignons
qui n'avaient pas les moyens d'acheter du fumier de cheval.
Un jour, alors que je marchais sur le Curragh de Kildare,
je suis tombé dans un mess d'officiers.
J'ai fini dans le FCA,
à faire des exercices militaires autour de la cantine humide,
jusqu'à ce que le commandant entende dire
que ma grand-mère s'était autrefois confessée
à un homme dont le beau-frère était
marié à un homme dont le cousin germain avait l'habitude de remplir
les bouillottes de Patrick Sarsfield avant la bataille de Clongorey.
J'ai dû prendre la fuite.

J'ai couru si vite que j'ai fini à Paddington,

à des millions de kilomètres du pays des saints et des érudits.
Je :
creusais des fondations, grattais des casseroles,
tirais des câbles, commençais des boulots,
faisais bouillir des bouilloires, préparais du thé,
creusais profond, Rose, et me faisais jeter.

J'étais un Irlandais jetable purgeant ma peine pour devenir
copilote sur un marteau-piqueur à Shepherd's Bush,
roulant à 140 km/h sur un JCB sur Kilburn High Road
quand la SPG m'a arrêté et m'a retenu sous la PTA,
jusqu'à ce que je m'échappe et passe à la clandestinité avec le Green Murphy.
Un jeudi soir, alors que je descendais Hammersmith Broadway,
j'ai rencontré un ami de Ballaghadereen, dans le comté de Roscommon,
qui était expert en démolition – les maisons géorgiennes étaient sa spécialité.
« Une chance de commencer ? Que sais-tu de la démolition ?»
(J'ai été connu pour démolir un tas de grosses bouteilles.)

Eh bien, le lundi matin est arrivé,
moi-même, Roger Sherlock, Liam Farrell, Martin Byrnes, Raymond Roland, Tony Rohr,
nous étions en train de peindre une porte.
Nous lui avons donné six couches et trois couches de plus – et ce n'était que la sous-couche.
Le contremaître aimait bien une chanson – le jeudi n'arrivait jamais trop tôt.
On gagnait cinq livres par jour et on mangeait tout ce qu'on pouvait,
mais c'est un sacré boulot d'essayer de manger toute la journée.
Pour faire court, Rose,
j'ai cherché un logement.
Je suis monté et j'ai frappé à la porte, cette grosse Anglaise est sortie,
m'a regardé et a dit :
« Hors de ma vue !
Il n'y aura absolument aucun Noir ni aucun Irlandais qui entrera ici. »
Alors j'ai fait semblant d'être un Sud-Africain blanc
et j'ai essayé de m'engager dans l'armée britannique pour m'améliorer.
Je me suis porté volontaire comme sous-traitant pour construire des maisons sans portes ni poignées.
Le recruteur me dit :
« Qu'est-ce que tu as fait ces derniers temps, Paddy ?»

« J'aidais O'Brien à déménager, monsieur », dis-je.
« Avant ça, j'ai répandu du produit toxique dans tout le Golden Vale,
j'ai aidé M. Gallagher à recouvrir Stephen's Green de béton,
j'ai aidé Sam Stevenson à bloquer toute la lumière du jour à Dublin,
j'ai aidé le Dr Smurfit à déplacer la Liffey,
j'ai aidé Lord O'Reilly à compter ses pièces d'or,
je distribuais du Diddly-Eye pour le Dr Darragh,
je mettais les micros pour Cathaoirleach,
j'emballais sous vide des steaks T-Bone pour Larry Maith an Fear,

cherchant le cœur du Green Core. »
« Bon sang, Paddy, tu es surqualifié pour l'armée britannique.
J'ai bien peur de devoir t'expulser d'Angleterre. »
Et il l'a fait... Exclusion totale.
Me voilà, Rose, de retour au bercail.
C'est une sacrée façon d'accueillir un émigré de retour au pays.
« Céad Míle Failte » mon œil,
avec ton insigne de pionnier, ton fáinne et ton étoile blanche pour ne pas avoir juré.
Bon sang, ce serait plus dans tes cordes de me ramener en ville en voiture de patrouille.
Et elle l'a fait.

Nous voilà en train de descendre Capel Street dans la voiture de patrouille blanche,
à la recherche d'un bar ouvert.
« Regarde, Rose, voilà Paddy Slattery. »
« Content de te revoir, Christy », dit Paddy.
« Salut, Big Slate !»
« Je suppose que toi et ta petite amie cherchez un verre. »
Eh bien, elle a enlevé sa casquette.

Elle l'a jetée sur le siège arrière de la voiture
et elle est entrée comme une flèche (gauche droite, gauche droite).
« Je prendrai un cognac avec un peu de porto. Je ne bois jamais de bière quand je suis en service. »
Du cognac et du porto !
C'était comme jeter de l'eau dans un tonneau de sciure de bois.
Elle a descendu son verre et bien sûr... Pas de porte-monnaie.
« Vivement l'heure sainte », dis-je.
« On se voit ce soir », dit-elle. « Ce sera mon tour. »

Mesdames et Messieurs, j'étais devant le GPO, attendant la plus belle femme du Kerry au monde.
La voilà qui arrive, Sainte Mère de Dieu, regardez-moi ça !
Elle descend le boulevard en Doc Martens et en 501.
« Hé, Rose !... Par ici !... »
« Qu'est-ce qui te tracasse, grand gaillard ?» me dit-elle
(je portais mes chaussures à plateforme).
« Ça ne me dérangerait pas de danser un peu, Rose. »
Elle m'a emmené dans une boîte de nuit du club de la Garda à Harcourt Street,
Le Baton Rouge... Un petit coin sympa sur Harcourt Street.
Attention aux voitures garées en quadruple file, aux pneus lisses et aux voitures sans vignette
là-dedans. Des murs de moustaches, des motards gays sous acide.
La Rose de Tralee et moi avons dansé toute la nuit,
jusqu'à environ cinq heures du matin, quand elle m'a dit :
« Ça te dirait de venir chez moi, Lofty ?»
Est-ce qu'un ours chie dans les bois ?
On est partis, moi, accroché à elle sur sa Honda 50,
en passant par Rathmines, Rathgar et Ranelagh,

en nous arrêtant au kebab ouvert 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7,
deux kebabs et le Leinster Leader,
puis chez elle. Deux étages plus haut,
elle a débouché le Blue Nun
et j'ai vomi sur le Rottweiler.
Elle a mis de la musique... Un nouveau CD sympa... Daniel.
« Oh, adieu, cher Donegal,
les roses et Gweedore. »

« Dis, un sandwich au bacon, ce serait possible ?»

Voilà comment j'ai rencontré la Rose de Tralee.
