Preserved
and
safe
on
a
high-up
shelf
Conservé
et
en
sécurité
sur
une
étagère
haute
Where
soiled
little
fingers
can't
mess
Où
les
petits
doigts
sales
ne
peuvent
pas
s'en
mêler
Catalogued
labeled
and
rarely-played
Catalogué,
étiqueté
et
rarement
joué
Polished
and
pure
and
possessed
Poli,
pur
et
possédé
Aaahaa

Best
keep
your
songs
in
the
safety
of
darkness
Il
vaut
mieux
garder
tes
chansons
dans
l'obscurité
And
never
expose
them
to
light
Et
ne
les
expose
jamais
à
la
lumière
Open
with
care
(shh),
pack
in
the
box
Ouvre
avec
soin
(chut),
emballe
dans
la
boîte
All
your
songs
might
grow
wings
and
take
flight
Toutes
tes
chansons
pourraient
prendre
leurs
ailes
et
s'envoler

(Whealin'

in
the

business
for
a
long
time...
(Rouler

depuis
longtemps...
And
this
guy
had
a
guitar...
Et
ce
mec
avait
une
guitare...
It
laid
around
there
and
I
lotta
times
there
wouldn't
be
any
customers
in
the
place
Elle
traînait
là
et
souvent
il
n'y
avait
pas
de
clients
dans
l'endroit
And
I'd
grab
up
this
guitar
and
I
got
to
pecking
around
on
it
Et
je
prenais
cette
guitare
et
je
me
mettais
à
pianoter
dessus
And
I
thought
it
sounded
awful
pretty)
Et
je
trouvais
ça
vraiment
joli)

The Boy Bands Have Won, and All the Copyists and the Tribute Bands and the TV Talent Show Producers Have Won, If We Allow Our Culture to Be Shaped by Mimicry, Whether from Lack of Ideas or From Exaggerated Respect. You Should Never Try to Freeze Culture. What You Can Do Is Recycle That Culture. Take Your Older Brother's Hand-Me-Down Jacket and Re-Style It, Re-Fashion It to the Point Where It Becomes Your Own. But Don't Just Regurgitate Creative History, or Hold Art and Music and Literature as Fixed, Untouchable and Kept Under Glass. The People Who Try to 'Guard' Any Particular Form of Music Are, Like the Copyists and Manufactured Bands, Doing It the Worst Disservice, Because the Only Thing That You Can Do to Music That Will Damage It Is Not Change It, Not Make It Your Own. Because Then It Dies, Then It's Over, Then It's Done, and the Boy Bands Have Won.
