When John was moving house
Among the things that he discovered
Were all the goodbyes in the world
In an old bathroom cupboard

Between the shampoos and the soap
Beside the aspirins
Were all the farewells ever said
And all the endings

He quickly closed the door
Then opened it again
The goodbyes were all still there
He wondered how they could all fit in

Nothing loud, just countless
Thousands of quiet phrases
All the footprints washed away
All the erasures

All the goodbyes in the world

He left the house and went to work
He thought about telling someone
But mostly he thought about getting home
To the cupboard in the bathroom

He decided to clean it out
When he got home that night
The thought of leaving it for someone else
Somehow didn't seem right

He put it on his list
With an asterisk
