It's of a pretty female as you may understand,
Her mind being bent for rambling into some foreign land.
She dressed herself in sailor's clothes or so it does appear,
And she hired with a captain to serve him for a year.
The captain's wife she being on board, she seemed in great joy
To think her husband had engaged such a handsome cabin boy.
And now and then she slipped him a kiss, and she would have liked to toy,
But it was the captain found out the secret of the handsome cabin boy.
Her cheeks they were like roses and her hair all in a curl,
The sailors often smiled and said, he looks just like a girl.
But eating all the captain's biscuit her colour did destroy
And the waist did swell of pretty Nell, the handsome cabin boy.
It was in the Bay of Biscay our gallant ship did plough.
One night among the sailors was a fearful flurryin' row.
They tumbled from their hammocks for their sleep it did destroy
And they swore about the groaning of the handsome cabin boy.
"Oh doctor dear, oh doctor," the cabin boy did cry,
"Me time has come, I am undone and I shall surely die."
The doctor come a-running and smiling at the fun,
To think a sailor lad should have a daughter or a son.
The sailors when they saw the joke, they all did stand and stare.
The child belong to none of them, they solemnly did swear.
And the captain's wife she says to him, "My dear I wish you joy,
For it's either you or me has betrayed the handsome cabin boy."
So each man took his tot of rum and he drunk success to trade,
And likewise to the cabin boy who was neither man nor maid.
It's hoping the wars don't rise again, our sailors to destroy,
And here's hoping for a jolly lot more like the handsome cabin boy.

Beau Matelot de Cabine

Il était une fois une jolie femme, comme tu peux le comprendre,
Son esprit était porté sur le vagabondage dans une terre étrangère.
Elle s'est habillée en vêtements de marin, ou du moins c'est ce qu'il semble,
Et elle s'est engagée auprès d'un capitaine pour le servir pendant un an.
La femme du capitaine était à bord, elle semblait ravie
De penser que son mari avait engagé un si beau matelot de cabine.
Et de temps en temps, elle lui glissait un baiser, et elle aurait aimé jouer,
Mais c'est le capitaine qui a découvert le secret du beau matelot de cabine.
Ses joues étaient comme des roses et ses cheveux en boucles,
Les marins souriaient souvent et disaient : "Il ressemble à une fille."
Mais en mangeant tous les biscuits du capitaine, sa couleur a disparu
Et la taille a gonflé de la belle Nell, le beau matelot de cabine.
C'est dans le Golfe de Gascogne que notre vaillant navire a vogué.
Une nuit, parmi les marins, il y a eu une terrible mêlée.
Ils sont tombés de leurs hamacs, car leur sommeil était brisé
Et ils ont juré à cause des gémissements du beau matelot de cabine.
"Oh docteur chéri, oh docteur," pleura le matelot de cabine,
"Mon heure est venue, je suis perdue et je vais mourir."
Le médecin est arrivé en courant et a souri à la plaisanterie,
De penser qu'un garçon marin puisse avoir une fille ou un fils.
Les marins, en voyant la blague, se sont tous arrêtés et ont regardé.
L'enfant n'appartenait à aucun d'entre eux, ils l'ont juré solennellement.
Et la femme du capitaine lui a dit : "Mon cher, je te souhaite beaucoup de joie,
Car c'est soit toi, soit moi qui avons trahi le beau matelot de cabine."
Alors chaque homme a pris sa dose de rhum et a bu à la réussite du commerce,
Et de même au matelot de cabine qui n'était ni homme ni femme.
J'espère que les guerres ne reviendront pas pour détruire nos marins,
Et j'espère pour beaucoup plus de joyeux comme le beau matelot de cabine.
