Dessus mon chevalet
La toile j′ai posé
Et puis j'ai commencé
Au crayon noir à faire l′esquisse
D'un compagnon des champs
D'un oiseau de beau temps
Rien qu′un chardonneret
Mais bien que beau, il était triste
Je me suis demandé
Qu′est-ce qu'il peut lui manquer?
C′est là que j'ai pensé
Que sans le ciel il ne peut vivre
Le bleu de mon pinceau
Fit autour de l′oiseau
Un ciel où le soleil tant chavirait
Qu'il semblait ivre
Il a un peu volé
Il a un peu chanté
Mais bien qu′il fasse beau
Je voyais bien qu'il était triste
Il ne peut pas voler
Sans jamais s'arrêter
Et s′il veut se poser
Il n′y a rien, ni pré ni arbre
J'aurais dû y penser
Avant de le créer
Je me suis rattrapé
J′ai fait des fleurs, j'ai fait des arbres
Je lui fis un ruisseau
Pour qu′il en boive l'eau
C′est quand je fis un nid
Que je le vis encore plus triste
C'est à la nuit tombée
Quand je l'ai vu couché
Si petit dans son nid
Un nid si grand qu′il semblait vide
Que j′ai pris mon pinceau
Le plus fin, le plus beau
Et que, tout contre lui
J'ai dessiné en faisant vite
Afin qu′il n'ait plus froid
Pour qu′il ne s'ennuie pas
Une belle compagne
Il était gai mais j′étais triste
Le tableau achevé
J'ai pensé qu'il fallait
Avant de me coucher
Pour l′embellir y mettre
Un cadre
Quand le jour s′est levé
Dessus mon chevalet
Mes deux chardonnerets
Avaient quitté mon paysage
Leur cage

The Sketch

On my easel
I placed the canvas
And then I began
To sketch with a black pencil
A companion of the fields
A bird of fair weather
Nothing but a goldfinch
But though beautiful, it was sad
I wondered
What could it be missing?
That's when I thought
That without the sky it cannot live
The blue of my brush
Made around the bird
A sky where the sun went down so much
That it seemed drunk
He flew a little
He sang a little
But though the weather was fine
I could see that he was sad
He cannot fly
Without ever stopping
And if he wants to land
There is nothing, neither meadow nor tree
I should have thought of that
Before creating it
I caught up
I made flowers, I made trees
I made him a stream
So that he could drink its water
It was when I made a nest
That I saw him even sadder
It is at nightfall
When I saw him lying
So small in his nest
A nest so large that it seemed empty
That I took my paintbrush
The finest, the most beautiful
And that, right against him
I drew quickly
So that he would no longer be cold
So that he would not be bored
A beautiful companion
He was happy but I was sad
The painting finished
I thought that it was necessary
Before going to bed
To embellish it
By putting a frame on it
When the day broke
On my easel
My two goldfinches
Had left my landscape
Their cage
