It was a hot afternoon, I caught a train up to town
I walked from Charing Cross to Soho in just under half an hour
Into an internet café, I went and had some tea
And I surfed the 'net looking for information on Randy
And I haven't even mentioned that I was interviewing Randy Newman.

I didn't feel at all nervous though for me this was new
Presenting an hour long special on Randy for Radio Two
Hey, we're in the same business and have some mutual acquaintances
I felt like I should know enough to put him through his paces
It should be a wizard wheeze for me to shoot the breeze with Randy Newman.

'Lets get a few things straight' - said Steve, the producer of the radio show
'Just relax and have a good time but there are some key things we'll want to know'
'That's fine' - I said - 'I've done my homework, I've bought the CDs and some notes'
'But I'd rather not read from written questions so let's just see how it goes'
'We've got an hour so let's not worry'
'We'll get some banter going and not hurry'.

He looked a little bit nervous, I said that it would be great
We're taping here in London and Randy's at home in L.A.
Cut to two hours later and it's one minute to five
And I'm thinking to myself, I'm glad this isn't going out live
There's a pounding in my heart as I start interviewing Randy Newman.

'Hello there, Randy, I'm Glenn Tilbrook, are you there? Can you hear me?'
'Let me just say that I've been a big fan of yours since 1973'
And all the questions that I thought would flow just sailed right out of my head
And in the hour that followed I huffed and bluffed my way through a pool of sweat
I remember asking him if he was doing merchandise in '74
And if so did he ever consider selling 'Randy Newman's Mighty Sword'
As a joke it wouldn't have made the 'C' List
It's a character of Randy's pet name for his penis.

Yes I was something less than a resounding success with Randy Newman
Randy had been kind but I floundered like I didn't have a clue, man

C'était un après-midi chaud, j'ai pris un train pour la ville
J'ai marché de Charing Cross à Soho en moins d'une demi-heure
Je suis entré dans un cybercafé, j'ai pris un thé
Et j'ai surfé sur le net à la recherche d'informations sur Randy
Et je n'ai même pas mentionné que j'interviewais Randy Newman.

Je ne me sentais pas nerveux du tout, pour moi c'était nouveau
Présenter une émission spéciale d'une heure sur Randy pour Radio Two
Hé, on est dans la même branche et on a des connaissances mutuelles
J'avais l'impression de savoir assez pour le mettre à l'épreuve
Ca devrait être un bon moment pour moi de discuter avec Randy Newman.

'Faisons les choses claires' - a dit Steve, le producteur de l'émission de radio
'Détende-toi et amuse-toi bien, mais il y a des choses clés que nous voudrons savoir'
'Pas de problème' - j'ai dit - 'J'ai fait mes devoirs, j'ai acheté les CD et quelques notes'
'Mais je préfère ne pas lire de questions écrites, alors voyons comment ça se passe'
'On a une heure, alors ne nous inquiétons pas'
'On va se lancer dans une conversation et ne pas se presser'.

Il avait l'air un peu nerveux, j'ai dit que ce serait génial
On enregistre ici à Londres et Randy est chez lui à Los Angeles.
Deux heures plus tard, il est 16h59
Et je me dis, je suis content que ça ne soit pas diffusé en direct
Mon cœur bat la chamade alors que je commence à interviewer Randy Newman.

'Bonjour Randy, je suis Glenn Tilbrook, es-tu là? Tu m'entends?'
'Laisse-moi te dire que je suis un grand fan de toi depuis 1973'
Et toutes les questions que je pensais faire couler ont disparu de ma tête
Et dans l'heure qui a suivi, j'ai bafouillé et j'ai fait mon chemin à travers une flaque de sueur
