I got into town a little early.
Had eight hours to kill before the show.
First I thought about heading up north of the bay

Or at least a fancy car.
But I ended up taking a taxi

The driveway was the same as I remembered
And a butler came and answered the door.
He just shook his head when I asked for her
And said "She doesn't live here anymore."
But he offered to give me the address
That they were forwarding her letters to.
I just took it and returned to the cabbie
And said "I got one more fare for you."
And so we rolled back into the city
Up to a five store old brownstone
I rang the bell that had her name on the mailbox.
The buzzer said somebody′s home.
And the look on her face as she opened the door
Was like an old joke told by a friend.
It'd taken ten more years but she'd found her smile
And I watched the corners start to bend.
And she said, "How are you Harry?
Haven′t we played this scene before?"
I said "It′s so good to see you, Sue
Had to play it out just once more."
Play it out just once more.
She said I've heard you flying high on my radio
I answered "It′s not all it seems"
That's when she laughed and she said, "It′s better sometimes
When we don't get to touch our dreams."
That′s when I asked her where was that actress
She said "That was somebody else"
And then I asked her why she looked so happy now
She said "I finally like myself, at last I like myself."
So we talked all through that afternoon
Talking about where we'd been
We talked of the tiny difference
Between ending and starting to begin.
We talked because talking tells you things
Like what you really are thinking about.
But sometimes you can't find what you′re feeling
Till all the word run out.
So I asked her to come to the concert.
She said "No, I work at night."
I said, "We′ve gotten too damn good at leaving, Sue"
She said, "Harry, you're right."
Don′t ask me if I made love to her
Or which one of us started to cry
Don't ask me why she wouldn′t take the money that I left
If I answered at all I'd lie.
So I thought about her as I sang that night
And how the circle keeps rolling around.
How I act as I′m facing the footlights
And how she's flying with both feet on the ground.
I guess it's a sequel to our story
From the journey ′tween heaven and hell
With half the time thinking of what might have been
And half thinkin′ just as well.
I guess only time will tell.

Alors la voilà, elle fait semblant d'être heureuse dans sa belle maison
Et moi, je vole dans mon taxi, je prends des pourboires et je plane.
Je suis arrivé en ville un peu plus tôt.
J'avais huit heures à tuer avant le spectacle.
J'ai d'abord pensé à aller au nord de la baie
Puis j'ai su où je devais aller.
J'ai pensé à prendre une limousine
Ou au moins une voiture de luxe.
Mais j'ai fini par prendre un taxi
Parce que c'est comme ça que je suis arrivé jusqu'ici.
Tu vois, il y a dix ans, c'était le siège avant
Conduire défoncé et ne ressentir aucune douleur.
Maintenant, je suis clean et assis à l'arrière
En route pour le 16 Parkside Lane.
L'allée était la même que dans mes souvenirs
Et un majordome est venu ouvrir la porte.
Il a juste secoué la tête quand je l'ai demandée
Et a dit : "Elle ne vit plus ici."
Mais il a proposé de me donner l'adresse
Où ils envoyaient son courrier.
Je l'ai prise et je suis retourné voir le chauffeur
Et j'ai dit : "J'ai une autre course pour vous."
Et nous sommes retournés en ville
Jusqu'à un vieil immeuble de cinq étages en pierre brune
J'ai sonné à la porte où son nom était sur la boîte aux lettres.
L'interphone a dit que quelqu'un était à la maison.
Et l'expression sur son visage lorsqu'elle a ouvert la porte
Était comme une vieille blague racontée par un ami.
Cela avait pris dix ans de plus, mais elle avait retrouvé son sourire
Et j'ai vu les coins commencer à se courber.
Et elle a dit : "Comment vas-tu Harry ?
N'avons-nous pas déjà joué cette scène ?"
J'ai dit : "C'est tellement bon de te revoir, Sue
Il fallait que je la rejoue encore une fois."
La rejouer encore une fois.
Elle a dit : "Je t'ai entendu voler haut sur ma radio"
J'ai répondu : "Ce n'est pas ce que ça semble être"
C'est alors qu'elle a ri et a dit : "C'est mieux parfois
Quand on ne peut pas toucher nos rêves."
C'est alors que je lui ai demandé où était cette actrice
Elle a dit : "C'était quelqu'un d'autre"
Et puis je lui ai demandé pourquoi elle avait l'air si heureuse maintenant
Elle a dit : "J'ai fini par m'aimer, enfin je m'aime."
Alors nous avons parlé tout au long de cet après-midi
Parlant de l'endroit où nous étions allés
Nous avons parlé de la petite différence
Entre finir et commencer à recommencer.
Nous avons parlé parce que parler te dit des choses
Comme ce à quoi tu penses vraiment.
Mais parfois tu ne peux pas trouver ce que tu ressens
Avant que tous les mots ne s'épuisent.
Alors je lui ai demandé de venir au concert.
Elle a dit : "Non, je travaille la nuit."
J'ai dit : "On est devenus trop bons pour partir, Sue"
Elle a dit : "Harry, tu as raison."
Ne me demande pas si j'ai fait l'amour avec elle
Ou lequel de nous deux s'est mis à pleurer
Ne me demande pas pourquoi elle n'a pas voulu prendre l'argent que j'ai laissé
Si je répondais, je mentirais.
Alors j'ai pensé à elle pendant que je chantais ce soir-là
Et comment le cercle continue de tourner.
Comment je joue la comédie face aux projecteurs
Et comment elle vole avec les deux pieds sur terre.
Je suppose que c'est une suite à notre histoire
Du voyage entre le paradis et l'enfer
La moitié du temps à penser à ce qui aurait pu être
Et l'autre moitié à penser que c'est tout aussi bien.
Je suppose que seul le temps nous le dira.
