The Rock

The rock is gonna fall on us, he woke with a start
And he ran to his mother, the fear dark in his heart
And he told her of the vision that he was sure he′d seen
She said: "Go back to sleep son, you're having a bad dream!"

Silly child--
Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won′t tumble to the ground
Remember Chicken Little said the sky was falling down
Well nothing ever came of that, the world still whirls around

"The rock is gonna fall on us," he stood and told the class
The professor put his chalk down and peered out through his glasses
But he went on and said; "I've seen it, high up on the hill
If it doesn't fall this year then very soon it will!"

Crazy boy--

We′ve more important studies than your fantasies and fears
You know that rock's been perched up there for a hundred thousand years

"I believe that we can stop it but the time is getting late

He was showing them contingencies when they showed him to the street

He went up on the mountain beside the giant stone
They knew he was insane so they left him all alone
He′d given up enlisting help for there was no one else

One night while he was working building braces on the ledge
The ground began to rumble the rock trembled on the edge

"The rock is gonna fall on us! Run or you'll all be crushed!"
And indeed the rock was moving, crumbling all to dust
He ran under it with one last hope that he could add a prop
And as he disappeared the rock came to a stop

The people ran into the street but by then all was still
The rock seemed where it always was or where it always will be
When someone asked where he had gone they said: "Oh he was daft.
Who cares about that crazy fool." And then they′d start to laugh

But high up on the mountain
When the wind is hitting it
If you're watching very closely
The rock slips a little bit

"Le rocher va nous tomber dessus", il s'est levé et l'a dit à la classe
Le professeur a posé sa craie et a regardé par-dessus ses lunettes
Mais il a continué et a dit : "Je l'ai vu, tout là-haut sur la colline
S'il ne tombe pas cette année, ce sera très bientôt !"

Nous avons des études plus importantes que tes fantasmes et tes peurs

"Je crois que nous pouvons l'arrêter, mais le temps presse
Tu vois, j'ai fait toutes les recherches, mes plans sont complets."
Il leur montrait les imprévus quand ils l'ont mis à la porte

Il est monté sur la montagne à côté de la pierre géante
Ils savaient qu'il était fou, alors ils l'ont laissé tout seul
Il avait abandonné l'idée de demander de l'aide, car il n'y avait personne d'autre
Il passait ses journées à imaginer des moyens d'arrêter le rocher lui-même
Une nuit, alors qu'il travaillait à construire des étais sur le rebord
Le sol a commencé à trembler, le rocher a tremblé sur le bord

"Le rocher va nous tomber dessus ! Fuyez ou vous serez tous écrasés !"
Et en effet, le rocher bougeait, s'effondrant en poussière
Il a couru en dessous avec un dernier espoir qu'il pourrait ajouter un étayage
Et alors qu'il disparaissait, le rocher s'est arrêté

Les gens sont descendus dans la rue, mais à ce moment-là, tout était calme
Le rocher semblait être à sa place habituelle, ou à l'endroit où il sera toujours
Quand quelqu'un a demandé où il était allé, ils ont dit : "Oh, il était idiot.
Qui se soucie de ce fou ?" Et puis ils ont commencé à rire

Mais tout là-haut sur la montagne
Quand le vent le frappe
Si tu regardes attentivement
Le rocher glisse un peu
