The Barrister and the Bargast

Across Paradise Square in his suit & bow tie
The Barrister strode with a gleam in his eye
His morals were low, but his fees were sky high
For he knew how to cheat & he knew how to lie

He worked late in the evening so he could charge more
For his time and his knowledge of old English law
The shadows lay deep as he walked from his door
Through the old cobbled square from a time long before

The Bargast awoke in the depths of his lair
Hidden from mortal eyes under the square
A huge ghostly dog with red eyes and black hair
He lifted his nose and he scented the air

What manner of man can give off such a smell?
The stench of corruption and Old Spice as well
It was worse than the stench in the bowels of Hell
A smell which the Bargast knew only too well

The Bargast came forth and the man stopped dead
He looked as the size of the beast and he said
"You better be licensed or woe betide you,
I'll have you put down and your master I'll sue"

The Bargast looked back with his red eyes aglow
He said "My master is no one you'd know,
I round up the guilty and I take them below,
Now it's your turn to feel my teeth in your soul"

The Barrister turned and he fled with some vigour
But expense account luncheons had fattened his figure
So the Bargast soon had the man pinned to the deck
And he opened his jaws to rip out his neck

The Barrister pleased and begged for his life
He spoke of his children and his greaving wife
The Bargast just stared the man deep in the eyes
And said "This World has heard enough of your lies"

"Your children despise you they'll be glad when you go,
Your wife left you three and a half years ago,
You have all the appeal of a three week dead Cod,
And you mistress loves only the size of your wad.

"There's none that will mourn you I bid you farewell
You soul is now forfeit, your place is in Hell,
For justice and mercy you care not one Groat"
And the noble beast ripped out the Barrister's throat

So hear me you Lawyers and learn from my tale
With your nose in the swill and your thumb on the scales
Beware of the Bargast and his sniffling snout
Or be sure that you sins will rip your throat out!

L'Avocat et le Barghest

À travers Paradise Square, dans son costume et sa cravate
L'avocat s'avançait, un éclat dans les yeux
Ses mœurs étaient basses, mais ses honoraires étaient exorbitants
Car il savait comment tricher et il savait comment mentir

Il travaillait tard le soir pour pouvoir facturer davantage
Pour son temps et sa connaissance du droit anglais ancien
Les ombres étaient profondes alors qu'il s'éloignait de sa porte
À travers la vieille place pavée, d'une époque lointaine

Le Barghest s'est réveillé au plus profond de sa tanière
Caché aux yeux mortels sous la place
Un énorme chien fantomatique aux yeux rouges et aux poils noirs
Il leva son nez et flaira l'air

Quel genre d'homme peut dégager une telle odeur ?
L'odeur de la corruption et de l'Old Spice
C'était pire que la puanteur dans les entrailles de l'enfer
Une odeur que le Barghest connaissait trop bien

Le Barghest est sorti et l'homme s'est arrêté net
Il regarda la taille de la bête et dit
"Tu ferais mieux d'être licencié ou malheur à toi,
Je te ferai abattre et je poursuivrai ton maître"

Le Barghest regarda en arrière, ses yeux rouges brillants
Il dit : "Mon maître n'est personne que tu connaîtrais,
Je rassemble les coupables et je les emmène en bas,
Maintenant, c'est ton tour de sentir mes dents dans ton âme"

L'avocat s'est retourné et s'est enfui avec vigueur
Mais les déjeuners sur le compte de dépenses l'avaient engraissé
Alors le Barghest a rapidement cloué l'homme au pont
Et il a ouvert ses mâchoires pour lui arracher le cou

L'avocat a supplié et a imploré pour sa vie
Il a parlé de ses enfants et de sa femme endeuillée
Le Barghest a simplement fixé l'homme profondément dans les yeux
Et a dit : "Ce monde en a assez entendu de tes mensonges"

"Tes enfants te méprisent, ils seront contents quand tu partiras,
Ta femme t'a quitté il y a trois ans et demi,
Tu as l'attrait d'une morue morte depuis trois semaines,
Et ta maîtresse n'aime que la taille de ton magot.

"Il n'y a personne qui pleurera pour toi, je te dis adieu
Ton âme est désormais confisquée, ta place est en enfer,
Car tu ne te soucies pas un sou de la justice et de la miséricorde"
Et la noble bête arracha la gorge de l'avocat

Alors écoute-moi, toi, Avocat, et apprends de mon histoire
Avec ton nez dans le fumier et ton pouce sur la balance
Méfie-toi du Barghest et de son museau reniflant
Ou sois sûr que tes péchés t'arracheront la gorge !
