John Brown

John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore.
His mama sure was proud of him!
He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all.
His mama's face broke out all in a grin.
"Oh son, you look so fine, I'm glad you're a son of mine,
You make me proud to know you hold a gun.
Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get,
And we'll put them on the wall when you come home."

As that old train pulled out, John's ma began to shout,
Tellin' ev'ryone in the neighborhood:
"That's my son that's about to go, he's a soldier now, you know."
She made well sure her neighbors understood.

She got a letter once in a while and her face broke into a smile
As she showed them to the people from next door.
And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun,
And these things you called a good old-fashioned war.

Oh! Good old-fashioned war!

Then the letters ceased to come, for a long time they did not come.
They ceased to come for about ten months or more.
Then a letter finally came saying, "Go down and meet the train.
Your son's a-coming home from the war."
She smiled and went right down, she looked everywhere around
But she could not see her soldier son in sight.
But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last,
When she did she could hardly believe her eyes.

Oh his face was all shot up and his hand was all blown off
And he wore a metal brace around his waist.
He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know,
While she couldn't even recognize his face!

Oh! Lord! Not even recognize his face.

"Oh tell me, my darling son, pray tell me what they done.
How is it you come to be this way?"
He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move
And the mother had to turn her face away.
"Don't you remember, Ma, when I went off to war
You thought it was the best thing I could do?
I was on the battleground, you were home ... acting proud.
You wasn't there standing in my shoes."

"Oh, and I thought when I was there, God, what am I doing here?
I'm a-tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin'.
But the thing that scared me most was when my enemy came close
And I saw that his face looked just like mine."

Oh! Lord! Just like mine!

"And I couldn't help but think, through the thunder rolling and stink,
That I was just a puppet in a play.
And through the roar and smoke, this string is finally broke,
And a cannon ball blew my eyes away."

As he turned away to walk, his Ma was still in shock
At seein' the metal brace that helped him stand.
But as he turned to go, he called his mother close
And he dropped his medals down into her hand.

John Brown est parti à la guerre pour se battre sur une terre étrangère.
Sa mère était tellement fière de lui !
Il se tenait droit et grand dans son uniforme et tout.
Le visage de sa mère s’illumina d’un sourire.
"Oh, mon fils, tu as l’air si bien, je suis content que tu sois mon fils,
Tu me rends fier de savoir que tu tiens une arme à feu.
Fais ce que le capitaine dit, tu obtiendras beaucoup de médailles,
Et nous les accrocherons au mur quand tu rentreras à la maison."

Alors que le vieux train partait, la mère de John s’est mise à crier,
En disant à tout le monde dans le quartier :
"C’est mon fils qui va partir, c’est maintenant un soldat, tu sais."
Elle s’est bien assurée que ses voisins comprennent.

Elle recevait une lettre de temps en temps et son visage s’illuminait d’un sourire
Alors qu’elle les montrait aux gens d’à côté.
Et elle se vantait de son fils avec son uniforme et son arme à feu,
Et ces choses que vous appeliez une bonne vieille guerre.

Oh ! Une bonne vieille guerre !

Puis les lettres ont cessé d’arriver, pendant longtemps, elles n’ont plus arrivé.
Elles ont cessé d’arriver pendant environ dix mois ou plus.
Puis une lettre est enfin arrivée disant : "Va à la gare et rencontre le train.
Ton fils revient de la guerre."
Elle a souri et s’est tout de suite rendue à la gare, elle a regardé partout
Mais elle n’a pas pu voir son fils soldat en vue.
Mais alors que tous les gens passaient, elle a enfin vu son fils,
Quand elle l’a vu, elle n’arrivait pas à y croire.

Oh, son visage était tout abattu et sa main était arrachée
Et il portait un corset métallique autour de sa taille.
Il murmurait d’une voix lente, d’une voix qu’elle ne connaissait pas,
Alors qu’elle ne reconnaissait même pas son visage !

Oh ! Seigneur ! Elle ne reconnaissait même pas son visage.

"Oh, dis-moi, mon fils chéri, dis-moi ce qu’ils ont fait.
Comment en es-tu arrivé là ?"
Il fit de son mieux pour parler mais sa bouche pouvait à peine bouger
Et la mère dut détourner le visage.
"Tu ne te souviens pas, Maman, quand je suis parti à la guerre
Tu pensais que c’était la meilleure chose que je pouvais faire ?
J’étais sur le champ de bataille, tu étais à la maison… fière.
Tu n’étais pas là à ma place."

"Oh, et j’ai pensé quand j’étais là-bas, mon Dieu, qu’est-ce que je fais ici ?
J’essaie de tuer quelqu’un ou de mourir en essayant.
Mais ce qui m’a le plus effrayé, c’est quand mon ennemi s’est approché
Et j’ai vu que son visage ressemblait au mien."

Oh ! Seigneur ! Tout comme le mien !

"Et je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de penser, à travers le tonnerre qui gronde et la puanteur,
Que je n’étais qu’une marionnette dans une pièce.
Et à travers le rugissement et la fumée, cette corde est enfin cassée,
Et un boulet de canon m’a arraché les yeux."

Alors qu’il se tournait pour s’en aller, sa mère était toujours sous le choc
De voir le corset métallique qui l’aidait à se tenir debout.
Mais alors qu’il se retournait pour partir, il appela sa mère près de lui
Et il laissa tomber ses médailles dans sa main.
