In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;

Our god, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The lord god almighty, jesus christ.

Enough for him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for him, whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But his mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

Notre Dieu, le ciel ne peut pas le contenir, ni la terre le soutenir ;

Assez pour lui, que les chérubins adorent nuit et jour,
Un sein plein de lait, et une crèche pleine de foin ;

Le bœuf et l'âne et le chameau qui adorent.

Les anges et les archanges se sont peut-être rassemblés là,
Les chérubins et les séraphins ont rempli l'air ;
Mais sa mère seulement, dans sa félicité de vierge,
A adoré le bien-aimé avec un baiser.

Que puis-je lui offrir, pauvre que je suis ?
Si j'étais un berger, j'apporterais un agneau ;
Si j'étais un sage, je ferais ma part ;
Mais ce que je peux lui offrir... c'est mon cœur.
