The hammering from the pit and the pounding of guns grew louder
My fear rose at the sound of someone creeping into the house
Then I saw it was a young artilleryman, weary, streaked with blood and dirt

What's happened?
They wiped us out. Hundreds dead, maybe thousands
The Heat Ray?
The Martians! They were inside the hoods of machines they'd made, massive metal things on legs!
Giant machines that walked, they attacked us! They wiped us out!
Machines?
Fighting Machines! Picking up men and bashing 'em against trees. Just hunks of metal
But they knew exactly what they were doing

There was another cylinder came last night
Yes. It looked bound for London
London! Carrie! I hadn't dreamed there could be danger to Carrie and her father, so many miles away
I must go to London at once
And me. Got to report to Headquarters, if there's anything left of it

At Byfleet we came upon an Inn, but it was deserted
Is everybody dead?
Not everybody. Look!
Six cannons with gunners standing by
Bows and arrows against the lightning
They haven't seen the heat ray yet

We hurried along the road to Weybridge
Suddenly, there was a heavy explosion
The ground heaved, windows shattered, gusts of smoke erupted into the air
Look! There they are! What did I tell you?

Quickly, one after the other, four of the Fighting Machines appeared
Monstrous tripods, higher than the tallest steeple, striding over the pine trees and smashing them
Walking engines of glittering metal
Each carried a huge funnel and I realized with horror that I'd seen this awful thing before

A fifth Machine appeared on the far bank
It raised itself to full height, flourished the funnel high in the air-and the ghostly, terrible Heat Ray struck the town
As it struck, all five Fighting Machines exulted, emitting deafening howls which roared like thunder
Ulla! Ulla!

The six guns we had seen, now fired simultaneously, decapitating a Fighting Machine
The Martian inside the hood was slain
Splashed to the four winds
And the body, nothing now but an intricate device of metal
Went whirling to destruction
As the other Monsters advanced, people ran away blindly
The Artilleryman among them
But I jumped into the water and hid until forced up to breathe
Now the guns spoke again, but this time the Heat Ray sent them to oblivion

Ulla!

With a white flash, the Heat Ray swept across the river
Scalded, half-blinded and agonized, I staggered through leaping, hissing water, towards the shore
I fell helplessly, in full sight of the Martians, expecting nothing but death
The foot of a Fighting Machine came down close to my head, then lifted again as the four Martians carried away the debris of their fallen comrade
And I realized that by a miracle, I had escaped

L'Artilleur et la Machine de Guerre

Le martèlement du puits et le fracas des canons se firent plus forts.
Ma peur grandissait au son de quelqu'un se glissant dans la maison.
Puis j'ai vu que c'était un jeune artilleur, épuisé, couvert de sang et de poussière.

Il y a quelqu'un ?
Entrez. Tenez, buvez ça.
Merci.
Que s'est-il passé ?
Ils nous ont anéantis. Des centaines de morts, peut-être des milliers.
Le Rayon Ardent ?
Les Martiens ! Ils étaient à l'intérieur de machines qu'ils avaient fabriquées, d'énormes choses de métal sur pattes !
Des machines géantes qui marchaient, ils nous ont attaqués ! Ils nous ont anéantis !
Des machines ?
Des Machines de Guerre ! Ils attrapaient les hommes et les frappaient contre des arbres. Juste des tas de métal.
Mais ils savaient exactement ce qu'ils faisaient.

Il y a eu un autre cylindre qui est arrivé la nuit dernière.
Oui. Il semblait se diriger vers Londres.
Londres ! Carrie ! Je n'avais pas imaginé qu'il puisse y avoir un danger pour Carrie et son père, à tant de kilomètres d'ici.
Je dois aller à Londres immédiatement.
Moi aussi. Je dois faire mon rapport au quartier général, s'il en reste quelque chose.

À Byfleet, nous sommes tombés sur une auberge, mais elle était déserte.
Tout le monde est mort ?
Pas tout le monde. Regardez !
Six canons avec des artilleurs à côté.
Des arcs et des flèches contre la foudre.
Ils n'ont pas encore vu le Rayon Ardent.

Nous nous sommes empressés de suivre la route vers Weybridge.
Soudain, il y a eu une violente explosion.
Le sol a tremblé, les fenêtres ont volé en éclats, des bouffées de fumée ont jailli dans l'air.
Regardez ! Les voilà ! Qu'est-ce que je vous avais dit ?

Rapidement, l'une après l'autre, quatre des Machines de Guerre sont apparues.
Des tripodes monstrueux, plus hauts que le plus haut clocher, enjambant les pins et les brisant.
Des machines ambulantes de métal scintillant.
Chacune portait un énorme entonnoir et j'ai réalisé avec horreur que j'avais déjà vu cette chose affreuse auparavant.

Une cinquième Machine est apparue sur l'autre rive.
Elle s'est dressée de toute sa hauteur, a brandi l'entonnoir haut dans les airs, et le Rayon Ardent, spectral et terrible, a frappé la ville.
Au moment où il a frappé, les cinq Machines de Guerre ont exulté, émettant des hurlements assourdissants qui ont grondé comme le tonnerre.
Ulla ! Ulla !

Les six canons que nous avions vus ont alors tiré simultanément, décapitant une Machine de Guerre.
Le Martien à l'intérieur de la carcasse a été tué.
Éclaboussé aux quatre vents.
Et le corps, rien de plus maintenant qu'un engin de métal complexe,
Est parti en tourbillonnant vers la destruction.
Alors que les autres Monstres avançaient, les gens se sont enfuis aveuglément.
L'artilleur parmi eux.
Mais j'ai sauté dans l'eau et je me suis caché jusqu'à ce que je sois obligé de remonter pour respirer.
Les canons ont tiré à nouveau, mais cette fois, le Rayon Ardent les a réduits à néant.

Ulla !

Dans un éclair blanc, le Rayon Ardent a balayé la rivière.
Ébouillanté, à moitié aveugle et agonisant, j'ai titubé dans l'eau bouillonnante et sifflante, vers la rive.
Je suis tombé, impuissant, sous les yeux des Martiens, ne m'attendant à rien d'autre qu'à la mort.
Le pied d'une Machine de Guerre est descendu près de ma tête, puis s'est relevé tandis que les quatre Martiens emportaient les débris de leur camarade tombé.
Et j'ai réalisé que par miracle, j'avais échappé.
Ulla ! Ulla !
