[Journalist]: No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us.
At midnight on the twelfth of August, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across two hundred million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. As I watched, there was another jet of gas. It was another missile starting on its way.
And that′s how it was for the next ten nights. A flare, spurting out from Mars, bright green, drawing a green mist behind it, a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight. Ogilvy the astronomer assured me we were in no danger. He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote forbidding planet.

[Journalist:] Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought to be an ordinary falling star, but next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the Common, and Ogilvy came to examine what lay there: a cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot... And with faint sounds of movement coming from within.
Suddenly the top began moving, rotating, unscrewing, and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside, trying to escape. He rushed to the cylinder, but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal.

[Journalist:] It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. From the railway station came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance.
It all seemed so safe and tranquil.

Peu d'hommes ont même envisagé la possibilité de la vie sur d'autres planètes et pourtant, à travers le gouffre de l'espace, des esprits immensément supérieurs aux nôtres regardaient cette Terre avec des yeux envieux, et lentement et sûrement, ils ont élaboré leurs plans contre nous.
À minuit le douze août, une énorme masse de gaz lumineux a jailli de Mars et s'est précipitée vers la Terre. À travers deux cents millions de kilomètres de vide, se précipitant invisiblement vers nous, est venu le premier des missiles qui allaient apporter tant de calamités sur Terre. En regardant, il y a eu un autre jet de gaz. C'était un autre missile qui partait en route.
Et c'est comme ça que ça s'est passé pendant les dix nuits suivantes. Une fusée éclairante, jaillissant de Mars, vert vif, traçant une traînée de brume verte, un spectacle magnifique, mais en quelque sorte troublant. L'astronome Ogilvy m'a assuré que nous n'étions pas en danger. Il était convaincu qu'il ne pouvait y avoir de vie sur cette planète lointaine et hostile.

[Journaliste]: Puis vint la nuit où le premier missile s'approcha de la Terre. On pensait qu'il s'agissait d'une étoile filante ordinaire, mais le lendemain, il y avait un énorme cratère au milieu du Common, et Ogilvy est venu examiner ce qui se trouvait là : un cylindre, d'une trentaine de mètres de diamètre, incandescent... Et avec de faibles bruits de mouvement venant de l'intérieur.
Soudain, le sommet a commencé à bouger, à tourner, à se dévisser, et Ogilvy a craint qu'il n'y ait un homme à l'intérieur, essayant de s'échapper. Il s'est précipité vers le cylindre, mais la chaleur intense l'a arrêté avant qu'il ne puisse se brûler sur le métal.

[Journaliste]: Cela me semble totalement incroyable maintenant que tout le monde a passé cette soirée comme si c'était comme n'importe quelle autre. De la gare, on entendait le bruit des trains de triage, qui sonnaient et grondaient, adoucis presque en mélodie par la distance.
Tout semblait si sûr et paisible.
