At midnight, on the 12th of august, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from mars and sped towards earth.
Across two hundred million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us, came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to earth.
As i watched, there was another jet of gas.
It was another missile, starting on its way.
And that's how it was for the next ten nights.
A flare, spurting out from mars.
Bright green, drawing a green mist behind it; a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight.
Ogilby, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger.
He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote, forbidding planet.

Then came the night the first missile approached earth.
It was thought to be an ordinary falling star, but next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the common, and ogilby came to examine what lay there.
A cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot, with faint sounds of movement coming from within.
Suddenly the top began moving: rotating, unscrewing; and ogilby feared there was a man inside trying to escape.
He rushed to the cylinder but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal.

La veille de la guerre (Am Vorabend Des Krieges)

À minuit, le 12 août, une énorme masse de gaz lumineux a jailli de Mars et s'est précipitée vers la Terre.
Sur deux cents millions de kilomètres de vide, se précipitant invisiblement vers nous, est arrivé le premier des missiles qui allaient apporter tant de calamités sur Terre.
En regardant, j'ai vu un autre jet de gaz.
C'était un autre missile, qui commençait son voyage.
Et c'est ainsi que cela s'est passé pendant les dix nuits suivantes.
Une fusée éclairante, jaillissant de Mars.
Vert vif, tirant une brume verte derrière elle ; un spectacle magnifique, mais en quelque sorte troublant.
Ogilby, l'astronome, m'a assuré que nous n'étions pas en danger.
Il était convaincu qu'il ne pouvait y avoir aucune créature vivante sur cette planète lointaine et hostile.

Puis vint la nuit où le premier missile s'est approché de la Terre.
On pensait qu'il s'agissait d'une étoile filante ordinaire, mais le lendemain, il y avait un énorme cratère au milieu du commun, et Ogilby est venu examiner ce qui s'y trouvait.
Un cylindre, d'une trentaine de mètres de diamètre, brûlant, avec des sons faibles de mouvements provenant de l'intérieur.
Soudain, le sommet a commencé à bouger : il a tourné, il s'est dévissé ; et Ogilby craignait qu'il n'y ait un homme à l'intérieur qui essaie de s'échapper.
Il s'est précipité vers le cylindre, mais la chaleur intense l'a arrêté avant qu'il ne puisse se brûler sur le métal.
