[Journalist]: No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us.
At midnight on the twelfth of August, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across two hundred million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. As I watched, there was another jet of gas. It was another missile starting on its way.
And that's how it was for the next ten nights. A flare, spurting out from Mars, bright green, drawing a green mist behind it, a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight. Ogilvy the astronomer assured me we were in no danger. He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote forbidding planet.

[Journalist:] Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought to be an ordinary falling star, but next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the Common, and Ogilvy came to examine what lay there: a cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot... And with faint sounds of movement coming from within.
Suddenly the top began moving, rotating, unscrewing, and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside, trying to escape. He rushed to the cylinder, but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal.

[Journalist:] It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. From the railway station came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance.
It all seemed so safe and tranquil.

[Journaliste]: Personne n'aurait cru, dans les dernières années du XIXe siècle, que les affaires humaines étaient surveillées depuis les mondes intemporels de l'espace. Personne n'aurait pu rêver que nous étions scrutés, comme quelqu'un avec un microscope étudie des créatures qui grouillent et se multiplient dans une goutte d'eau. Peu d'hommes ont même envisagé la possibilité de vie sur d'autres planètes, et pourtant, à travers le gouffre de l'espace, des esprits immensément supérieurs aux nôtres regardaient cette Terre avec des yeux envieux, et lentement et sûrement, ils ont élaboré leurs plans contre nous.
À minuit le douze août, une énorme masse de gaz lumineux a jailli de Mars et s'est précipitée vers la Terre. À travers deux cents millions de kilomètres de vide, se précipitant invisiblement vers nous, est arrivé le premier des missiles qui devaient apporter tant de calamités à la Terre. En regardant, il y a eu un autre jet de gaz. C'était un autre missile qui partait.
Et c'est comme ça que ça s'est passé pendant les dix nuits suivantes. Une fusée, jaillissant de Mars, vert vif, laissant une traînée de brume verte derrière elle, un spectacle magnifique, mais quelque peu troublant. Ogilvy, l'astronome, m'a assuré que nous n'étions pas en danger. Il était convaincu qu'il ne pouvait pas y avoir de vie sur cette planète lointaine et hostile.

[Journaliste]: Puis vint la nuit où le premier missile approcha de la Terre. Il était considéré comme une étoile filante ordinaire, mais le lendemain, il y avait un énorme cratère au milieu du Common, et Ogilvy est venu examiner ce qui s'y trouvait: un cylindre, d'une trentaine de mètres de diamètre, incandescent... Et avec des sons de mouvements provenant de l'intérieur.
Soudain le sommet a commencé à bouger, à tourner, à se dévisser, et Ogilvy a craint qu'il n'y ait un homme à l'intérieur, essayant de s'échapper. Il s'est précipité vers le cylindre, mais la chaleur intense l'a arrêté avant qu'il ne puisse se brûler sur le métal.

[Journaliste]: Il me semble totalement incroyable maintenant que tout le monde ait passé cette soirée comme si c'était une soirée comme les autres. De la gare, on entendait le bruit des trains qui manœuvraient, qui sonnaient et qui grondaient, presque mélodieux à cause de la distance.
Tout semblait si sûr et tranquille.
