They left me, leaving my house on fire, me running round ---
Got out through the window.
While clinging to the skirts of fate
Was not my idea of fun
I′ll jump to it gladly.
The town was filled with smoke and hate.
Came to my senses just too late
To realize that all I ever owned
Was borrowed. I thanked them for having shown
Me that nothing ever really belongs to anyone.
They burned my books and they broke my car,
And gave the dog to a man who used him for breeding.
They felled my trees and they tramped flowers and threw
The kitten into my new pool.
The same things done to other men had made them run away from the city.
This being the case, I joined them there and breathing air spent
The night with these new friends.

Ils m'ont quitté, laissant ma maison en feu, moi qui courais partout ---
Je suis sorti par la fenêtre.
En me cramponnant aux jupes du destin
Ce n'était pas mon idée de m'amuser
J'y saute avec plaisir.
La ville était remplie de fumée et de haine.
J'ai repris mes esprits trop tard
Pour réaliser que tout ce que j'avais jamais possédé
Était emprunté. Je les ai remerciés de m'avoir montré
Que rien n'appartient jamais vraiment à personne.
Ils ont brûlé mes livres et ils ont cassé ma voiture,
Et ils ont donné le chien à un homme qui l'a utilisé pour la reproduction.
Ils ont abattu mes arbres et ils ont piétiné les fleurs et ont jeté
Le chaton dans ma nouvelle piscine.
Les mêmes choses faites à d'autres hommes les avaient fait fuir la ville.
Dans ce cas, je les ai rejoints là-bas et respirant l'air j'ai passé
La nuit avec ces nouveaux amis.
