We pick this song we're gonna do
By a fella called Dan Penn
And Dan's a, a song-writing legend, a soul song-writing legend
He's a great singer too

And anyway, Dan came into the studio to, to visit us while we're recording the song
Which was like a big honour
And we're sitting there
I said to Dan "Would you like to come and sing the song with us?"
So he did a bit of a duet on the song with us which was great
So we finished that song, and that we novice
We thought it was great havin' Dan there, he wrote the song
And he said "Oh do you mind..."
He's a really nice chap, you know, he's really sorta laid-back
Country boy, wears fuckin' overalls and shit like that

And he's sittin' there and he said ah
"Do you mind if I just, you know, stick around and watch you guys record?"
We said "Sure Dan, we'd be- we would love it, we'd be honoured"
So ah, we randomly pick another song to do
And we start sorta knocking it together, learning the chords
And Dan's in the corner lookin' a bit uncomfortable
He said "Um, hey I wrote that song too"
And I went "Oh, shit. Sorry man, I didn't know" you know
So, he sits there, he thought it was great
We got to do another song, that's what he's there for

Getting towards the end of the day we think
"We could squeeze one more song in"
So we'd pull a song out of the hat you know, and ah, start learnin' it
And Dan's like "...um, hey guys, I wrote that song too"
And I'm goin' "Fuck me, what didn't you write?"
As it was, it was purely out of chance
We did three of Dan Penn's songs while he was in the studio
This was the first one

Alors, on a fait cet album, "Soul Searchin'", à Nashville
Avec Kevin Shirley et mon producteur assis juste ici
Il vient juste de déménager en Australie

On a choisi cette chanson qu'on allait faire
Par un type qui s'appelle Dan Penn
Et Dan est une légende de l'écriture, une légende de l'écriture soul
Il est aussi un excellent chanteur

Et de toute façon, Dan est venu au studio pour nous rendre visite pendant qu'on enregistrait la chanson
Ce qui était un grand honneur
Et on est assis là
J'ai dit à Dan "Tu voudrais venir chanter la chanson avec nous ?"
Alors il a fait un petit duo sur la chanson avec nous, ce qui était génial
On a donc fini cette chanson, et on était novice
On trouvait ça génial d'avoir Dan là, il a écrit la chanson
Et il a dit "Oh, tu ne serais pas contre..."
C'est vraiment un type sympa, tu sais, il est vraiment relax
Un garçon de la campagne, il porte des salopettes et des trucs comme ça

Et il est assis là et il a dit "Euh"
"Tu ne serais pas contre si je restais juste, tu sais, à vous regarder enregistrer ?"
On a dit "Bien sûr Dan, on serait ravis, on serait honorés"
Alors, on a choisi une autre chanson au hasard
Et on a commencé à la jouer, à apprendre les accords
Et Dan est dans le coin, un peu mal à l'aise
Il a dit "Euh, hé, j'ai écrit cette chanson aussi"
Et j'ai dit "Oh, merde. Désolé mec, je ne savais pas", tu vois
Alors, il s'assoit là, il a trouvé ça génial
On a pu faire une autre chanson, c'est pour ça qu'il est là

Vers la fin de la journée, on s'est dit
"On pourrait caser une autre chanson"
On a donc tiré une chanson au sort, tu sais, et on a commencé à l'apprendre
Et Dan est là "...euh, hé les gars, j'ai écrit cette chanson aussi"
Et je fais "Putain, qu'est-ce que tu n'as pas écrit ?"
C'était vraiment par hasard
On a fait trois chansons de Dan Penn pendant qu'il était au studio
C'était la première
