It was a hot day in Sinoia and I'd just done a show.
I was talking to the children outside the Town Hall door.
something made me turn around; there stood this little chap
With Sergeant stripes and a uniform and a little soldier's cap.
I said "Hey sonny what's your name?" and with a twinkle in his eye,
He turned and gave me a smart salute and he said "I'm Sergeant Guy"
He told me that his father was somewhere out there in the war
And this is what he said to me when I asked him to tell me some more.
" I sometimes miss my dad at night and the stories he tells me,
But he's been gone for a month or so protecting our country
But mom and I, we manage fine but sometimes she looks sad
And I wish that he was home right now but the army needs my Dad...
One day I'll be a troopie, protecting my fair land
With a cammo jacket just like Dad's and a rifle in my hand
And I'm gonna be the bravest when the terrs are comin' near
But Mom says I must wait a while 'cos' I'm only eight next year.
We'll go fishing on my birthday and my friends will come along
And when the campfire's burning Dad will sing his troopie songs
And Mom's not looking sad no more 'cos the phone call came today;
It was my troopie hero, and he says he's on his way"
One day I'll be a troopie, protecting my fair land

Es war ein heißer Tag in Sinoia und ich hatte gerade eine Show beendet.
Ich sprach mit den Kindern draußen vor der Rathaustür.
Etwas ließ mich umdrehen; da stand dieser kleine Kerl
mit Sergeantenstreifen, einer Uniform und einer kleinen Soldatenmütze.
Ich sagte: "Hey Kleiner, wie heißt du?" und mit einem Funkeln in seinen Augen,
drehte er sich um, salutierte mir zackig und sagte: "Ich bin Sergeant Guy."
Er erzählte mir, dass sein Vater irgendwo da draußen im Krieg sei
und das sagte er mir, als ich ihn bat, mir mehr zu erzählen.
"Ich vermisse meinen Papa manchmal nachts und die Geschichten, die er mir erzählt,
aber er ist seit etwa einem Monat weg, um unser Land zu beschützen.
Aber Mama und ich, wir kommen gut zurecht, aber manchmal sieht sie traurig aus
und ich wünschte, er wäre jetzt zu Hause, aber die Armee braucht meinen Papa...
Eines Tages werde ich ein Soldat sein, der mein schönes Land beschützt,
mit einer Tarnjacke, genau wie Papa, und einem Gewehr in meiner Hand.
Und ich werde der Mutigste sein, wenn die Terroristen näher kommen,
aber Mama sagt, ich muss noch eine Weile warten, denn ich werde erst nächstes Jahr acht.
Wir werden an meinem Geburtstag angeln gehen und meine Freunde werden mitkommen
und wenn das Lagerfeuer brennt, wird Papa seine Soldatenlieder singen.
Und Mama sieht nicht mehr traurig aus, denn heute kam der Anruf;
Es war mein Soldatenheld, und er sagt, er sei auf dem Weg."
