Nun, ich wollte mal Schleppkutscher werden,
doch ich kriegte den Dreh mit dem Ratscheisen nie raus.
Ich wuchs auf, arbeitete an Deck im
Illinois-Handel, mit Kohlestaub im Ohr.
Weihnachtsabend blieb ich im Eis stecken,
und mein Hintern frohr ein – ja, echt.
Nur am Zittern und Beben, mit 'nem südlichen Anfall von diesen
Dampferpfeifen-Blues.
Oh, Captain Way, tut mir leid, ich zieh meinen Hut vor dir,
du hingst am alten Kochherd 'rum,
mit den Dampferpfeifen-Blues.

Weit im Norden rief ich dich an,
doch niemand hob ab.
Also öffnete ich das Fenster, rauchte ein bisschen
und sah den Autos zu.
Ich such dich und frag dich,
ob was Neues du fandst.
