When I was a kid, we used to get the christmas catalog from montgomery wards in chicago.
Sometimes we'd get it as early as late august.
It was the big book of wishes, hopes and desires.
My three brothers and I were allotted twenty-five bucks a piece, including tax.
So I'd make up a different christmas list every night
From the first of september 'til the twenty-forth of december.
Matter of fact, let me present you with my christmas credentials.
When I was three years old, at least that's what my mother told me,
I ate an entire ornament. I ate a big red one, I thought it was an apple.
They kinda freaked out and was gonna take me to the hospital
But they couldn't stop me from laughing so they just left me alone.
So I guess I still got that christmas in me all the time, you know?

One year, I got a wooden roly-poly for christmas,
You know the things you knock down and they bounce right back up.
They made 'em out of wood back then, that's how old I am.
Nowadays, they make 'em out of plastic.
My mom says "they just don't make 'em like that anymore". and I says, "no ma they don't".

Then there was the year I came home only eave from the army,
From germany to marry my highschool sweetheart on the day after christmas.
My little brother billy, who was twelve at the time,
Had just gotten his first job so he was able to afford to buy some christmas presents
For his brothers and his mom and dad out of his own pocket.
Billy had a job selling subscriptions for the chicago tribune.

He told me this guy named rocky would pick him up in a station wagon,
Him and some other boys, and he'd take 'em out to some strange neighborhood
And drop 'em off and he gave them this whole spiel to give their potential customers.
Supposedly their little brother had won a free trip to our nation's capital washington, d.c.,
But he couldn't go on the trip if his older brother wouldn't accompany him
So if you would please buy a subscription to the chicago tribune then my little brother will be happy.
Wow, what a shyster! some people'll do anything to get to the whitehouse.

Then there was the year that my mom and dad gave me my first guitar.
Ah man it was gorgeous, I still got the thing.
It was a like aqua blue. kinda dark aqua blue with a cream colored heart. was a silvertone from montgomery wards. the model was called kentucky blue and man when I saw that sitting under the tre
Ust couldn't wait.
First year so I didn't know how to play it,
I'd just stand in from of the mirror with a string around my neck with that guitar and I'd try to look like elvis.
Then my brother dave taught me a couple of chords,
Now I'm here in your living room singing and talking to you.
It's funny how things work out.

So-a whyn't you go find a stranger and extend your hand to 'em.

Un Noël avec John Prine

J'adore Noël
C'est tellement agréable.
J'aimerais bien que chaque jour soit Noël,
Sauf la veille de Noël et le quatre juillet.
On ne voudrait pas rater les feux d'artifice, hein ?
Quand j'étais gamin, on recevait le catalogue de Noël de chez Montgomery Ward à Chicago.
Parfois, on le recevait dès la fin août.
C'était le grand livre des souhaits, des espoirs et des désirs.
Mes trois frères et moi avions droit à vingt-cinq dollars chacun, taxes comprises.
Alors je faisais une liste de Noël différente chaque soir
Du premier septembre au vingt-quatre décembre.
D'ailleurs, laisse-moi te présenter mes références en matière de Noël.
Quand j'avais trois ans, du moins c'est ce que ma mère m'a dit,
J'ai mangé une boule de Noël en entier. J'en ai mangé une grosse rouge, je pensais que c'était une pomme.
Ils ont un peu paniqué et ont voulu m'emmener à l'hôpital
Mais ils n'arrivaient pas à m'empêcher de rire alors ils m'ont laissé tranquille.
Alors je suppose que j'ai toujours ce Noël en moi, tu sais ?

Une année, j'ai eu un culbuto en bois pour Noël,
Tu sais, ces trucs qu'on fait tomber et qui se relèvent tout seuls.
Ils les faisaient en bois à l'époque, c'est pour te dire mon âge.
Aujourd'hui, ils les font en plastique.
Ma mère me dit "ils n'en font plus comme ça". et je lui dis "non maman, ils n'en font plus".

Puis il y a eu l'année où je suis rentré de l'armée la veille de Noël,
D'Allemagne, pour épouser mon amour de lycée le lendemain de Noël.
Mon petit frère Billy, qui avait douze ans à l'époque,
Venait d'avoir son premier emploi et il pouvait donc s'offrir des cadeaux de Noël
Pour ses frères, sa mère et son père avec son propre argent.
Billy avait un travail de vendeur d'abonnements pour le Chicago Tribune.

Il m'a dit que ce type, Rocky, venait le chercher dans un break,
Lui et d'autres garçons, et qu'il les emmenait dans un quartier inconnu
Et les déposait là, et il leur avait fait tout un discours à servir à leurs clients potentiels.
Apparemment, leur petit frère avait gagné un voyage gratuit dans notre capitale, Washington D.C.,
Mais il ne pouvait pas y aller si son grand frère ne l'accompagnait pas
Alors si vous vouliez bien vous abonner au Chicago Tribune, mon petit frère serait content.
Waouh, quel escroc ! Les gens sont prêts à tout pour aller à la Maison Blanche.

Et puis il y a eu l'année où mes parents m'ont offert ma première guitare.
Oh là là, elle était magnifique, je l'ai toujours.
Elle était bleu aqua. Un genre de bleu aqua foncé avec un cœur couleur crème. C'était une Silvertone de chez Montgomery Ward. Le modèle s'appelait Kentucky Blue et quand j'ai vu ça sous le sapin
J'avais tellement hâte.
La première année, je ne savais pas en jouer,
Je me tenais juste devant le miroir avec une corde autour du cou et cette guitare et j'essayais de ressembler à Elvis.
Puis mon frère Dave m'a appris quelques accords,
Et maintenant je suis là, dans ton salon, à chanter et à te parler.
C'est marrant comme les choses tournent.

Alors pourquoi tu n'irais pas trouver un étranger et lui serrer la main ?
Si tu vois quelqu'un qui n'a pas l'air d'aller aussi bien que toi, glisse-lui un billet,
Surtout s'il ne mendie pas.
Va acheter à ta chérie une horloge coucou ou une boule à neige musicale,
Tu sais, celles qui jouent de la musique quand on les retourne,

Parce qu'après tout, bon sang, c'est Noël.
