They lie, the men who tell us for reasons of their own
That want is here a stranger, and that misery's unknown;
For where the nearest suburb and the city proper meet
My window-sill is level with the faces in the street --
Drifting past, drifting past,
To the beat of weary feet --
I sorrow for the owners of those faces in the street.

And cause I have to sorrow, in a land so young and fair,
To see upon those faces the marks of Want and Care;
I look in vain for traces of the fresh and fair and sweet
In the sallow, sunken faces that are drifting through the street --
Drifting on, drifting on,
To the scrape of restless feet;
I sorrow for the owners of the faces in the street.

I wonder would the apathy of wealthy men endure
Were all their windows level with the faces of the Poor?
Ah! Mammon's slaves, your knees shall knock, your hearts in terror beat,
When your God demands a reason for the sorrows of the street,
The wrong things and the bad things
And the sad things that we meet
In the filthy lane and alley, and the cruel and heartless street.

Once I cried: 'Oh, God Almighty! if Thy might doth still endure,
Now show me in a vision for the wrongs of Earth a cure.'
And, lo! with shops all shuttered I saw a city's street,
And in the warning distance heard the tramp of many feet,
Pouring on, pouring on
To a drum's loud threatening beat,
And the war hymns and the cheering of the people in the street

And so it must be while the world goes rolling round its course,
The warning pen shall write in vain, the warning voice grow hoarse,
And kindled eyes all blazing bright with revolution's heat,
Flashing swords reflecting rigid faces in the street
Coming near, coming near
To a drum's dull distant beat
Then I saw the army that was marching down the street...

Ils mentent, ces hommes qui nous disent, pour leurs propres raisons,
Que le besoin est un étranger ici, et que la misère est inconnue ;
Car là où la banlieue la plus proche et la ville propre se rencontrent,
Mon rebord de fenêtre est au niveau des visages dans la rue -
Passant, passant,
Au rythme de pas las -
Je suis attristé pour les propriétaires de ces visages dans la rue.

Et parce que je dois être attristé, dans un pays si jeune et si beau,
De voir sur ces visages les marques du Besoin et du Souci ;
Je cherche en vain des traces de ce qui est frais, beau et doux
Dans les visages blêmes, creux, qui défilent dans la rue -
Passant, passant,
Au grincement de pas agités ;
Je suis attristé pour les propriétaires des visages dans la rue.

Je me demande si l'apathie des hommes riches persisterait
Si toutes leurs fenêtres étaient au niveau des visages des Pauvres ?
Ah ! Esclaves de Mammon, vos genoux vont frapper, vos cœurs vont battre de terreur,
Quand votre Dieu demandera une raison pour les chagrins de la rue,
Les choses fausses et les choses mauvaises
Et les choses tristes que nous rencontrons
Dans les ruelles sales et les allées, et dans la rue cruelle et impitoyable.

Une fois j'ai crié : 'Oh, Dieu Tout-Puissant ! si ta puissance perdure encore,
Montre-moi maintenant, en vision, un remède aux maux de la Terre.'
Et, voilà ! avec les magasins tous fermés, j'ai vu la rue d'une ville,
Et dans la distance d'avertissement, j'ai entendu le pas de nombreux pieds,
Déversant, déversant
Au rythme menaçant d'un tambour,
Et les chants de guerre et les acclamations des gens dans la rue

Et c'est ainsi que cela doit être, tandis que le monde continue de tourner sur son cours,
La plume d'avertissement écrira en vain, la voix d'avertissement deviendra rauque,
Et des yeux enflammés, brillants de la chaleur de la révolution,
Des épées flamboyantes réfléchissant des visages rigides dans la rue
Approchant, approchant
Au rythme sourd et lointain d'un tambour
Alors j'ai vu l'armée qui marchait dans la rue...
