Hiawatha's Vision

On the shores of Gitchgoomy by the shining big sea water
Hiawatha old and greyin' listened to the older prophet listened to lagu
And the young men and the women from the land of Ojibways
From the land of the Dakotas from the woodlands and the prairies
Stood and listened to the prophet heard lagu tell Hiawatha

Our people were all scattered all forgetful of our councils
Left their homelands going westward wild and woeful
And the man with bearded faces the men with skin so fair
With their barking sticks of thunder drove the remnants of our people
Farther westward westward westward then wild wild and wilder
Grew the West that once was ours

Et sur ce grand canot il y avait des voiles pour le porter rapidement
Et il portait beaucoup de gens, étranges et étrangers étaient ces gens
Et blancs étaient tous leurs visages, et avec des cheveux leurs mentons étaient couverts
Alors dit Hiawatha, j'ai vu une vision plus sombre
Des centaines sont venues après eux, ont poussé leur chemin à travers nos prairies
Dans nos forêts résonnaient leurs haches, dans nos vallées fumaient leurs villes
Notre peuple était dispersé, tous oublieux de nos conseils
Ils ont quitté leurs terres natales, allant vers l'ouest, sauvages et malheureux
Et les hommes aux visages barbus, les hommes à la peau si claire
Avec leurs bâtons d'écorce de tonnerre ont chassé les restes de notre peuple
