Valhalla (Live)

Sigurd was an Odin-man, the last of pagan-kind
For Churchmen rule the countryside and all men they could find
Yet Sigurd prayed to Odin-god with heart, and soul, and mind
In hopes that he would reach Valhalla

Sigurd died in battle, crying, "Odin!" to the last
Beyond the reach of Churchmen's Heaven, his soul speeded past
But when he reached the Bifrost Bridge, he found the gates barred fast
Alas, no entry to Valhalla

Odin's voice called to him then, "The gate I'll not unbar
For we are under siege; with Churchmen's Heaven we're at war
Yet I shall keep my pledge to you, though you must wander far
Still, I shall bring you to Valhalla!"

The winds of time took Sigurd then and whipped him down the years
They burned away his memories of love and hope and fears
And left him as a newborn babe whose foremost cry and tears
Were for lost promise of Valhalla

This age and name fit ill on him, he grew to man's estate
A thoughtful, bookish, lonely lad who felt betrayed by fate
Who dreamed and read and oft regretted he was born too late
For the age of Odin and Valhalla

He came upon anachronists who kept the ancient skills
Gladly did he join with them and practiced with all will
For he felt an old hope stirring as he persisted still
A long step closer to Valhalla

He called himself Lord Sigurd now, he dressed in black bear skin
He hastened through his duties to his mundane world and kin
For in the weekend combat, he could feel the veil wear thin
Till it seemed he could almost reach Valhalla

In time, he won a Baron's rank, the folk bowed down before
At length, a herald rose and spake, "Milord, you couldn't do more
Pray, bring your skills with us this year out to the Eastern War
It's the next best thing to old Valhalla!"

So Sigurd went to war that year and stared at what he found
The ancient guards and armored folk, the clanging battleground
The marketplace, the meat halls, and the campsites sprawling round
And he felt time shift him to Valhalla

For look, the warriors battled there so merrily all day
And maidens resurrected everyone the strokes would slay
Then at the meat hall, they would feast and sing the night away
Oh, it fit all descriptions of Valhalla!

'Twas true, it wasn't perfect, there was war but once a year
With lesser revels once a month in kingdoms far and near
And all the dreary lesser days, the mundane world was here
But it was close enough to call Valhalla

Be careful what paradise you deal
What hope you make other dreamers feel
For if too many hear it, they will struggle to draw near it
And in the search, they might just make it real

So every war and revel now go to the feasting hall
And there you'll find a Viking Lord named Sigurd standing tall
And giving thanks to Odin for the pledge kept after all
Singing, "Yo, ho, welcome to Valhalla!"
For we have made our own Valhalla
For we are the builders of Valhalla

Les vents du temps emportèrent Sigurd et le balayèrent à travers les années

Et le laissèrent comme un nouveau-né dont les premiers cris et larmes
Étaient pour la promesse perdue du Valhalla

Ce siècle et ce nom lui allaient mal, il devint un homme
Un garçon pensif, livresque et solitaire qui se sentait trahi par le destin
Qui rêvait, lisait et regrettait souvent d'être né trop tard
Pour l'âge d'Odin et du Valhalla

Il rencontra des anachronistes qui conservaient les anciennes compétences
Il se joignit volontiers à eux et pratiqua avec toute sa volonté
Car il sentait un vieil espoir s'éveiller alors qu'il persistait encore
Un grand pas de plus vers le Valhalla

Il se faisait maintenant appeler Seigneur Sigurd, il s'habillait d'une peau d'ours noir
Il se hâtait de remplir ses devoirs envers son monde et sa famille mondains
Car dans le combat du week-end, il sentait le voile s'amincir
Jusqu'à ce qu'il lui semble pouvoir presque atteindre le Valhalla

Avec le temps, il gagna le rang de Baron, le peuple s'inclina devant
Enfin, un héraut se leva et dit : "Mon Seigneur, vous ne pourriez faire plus
De grâce, apportez vos compétences avec nous cette année à la guerre de l'Est
C'est ce qui se rapproche le plus du vieux Valhalla!"

Alors Sigurd partit à la guerre cette année-là et regarda ce qu'il trouva
Les anciennes gardes et les gens en armure, le champ de bataille bruyant
Le marché, les halles à viande et les campements qui s'étendaient tout autour
Et il sentit le temps le transporter au Valhalla

Car regarde, les guerriers se battaient là si joyeusement toute la journée
Et des jeunes filles ressuscitaient tous ceux que les coups frappaient
Puis, à la halle à viande, ils festoyaient et chantaient toute la nuit
Oh, cela correspondait à toutes les descriptions du Valhalla!

Eh bien

C'était vrai, ce n'était pas parfait, il n'y avait la guerre qu'une fois par an
Avec des festivités moindres une fois par mois dans des royaumes lointains
Et tous les autres jours mornes, le monde banal était là
Mais c'était assez proche pour s'appeler Valhalla

Fais attention au paradis que tu offres
À l'espoir que tu fais ressentir aux autres rêveurs
Car si trop de gens l'entendent, ils lutteront pour s'en approcher
Et dans leur quête, ils pourraient bien le rendre réel

Alors chaque guerre et chaque fête se rendent maintenant à la salle des banquets
Et là, tu trouveras un seigneur viking nommé Sigurd, debout et fier
Remerciant Odin pour sa promesse tenue après tout
Chantant : "Yo ho, bienvenue au Valhalla!"
