He had a wounded leg
For two days and nights he had slept
Feverish and despairing
Screaming and delirious with pain
He had crawled into the basement just as a man fell to his knees
One arm thrown wide

His hand was reaching for help that would come too late
London - no answer
Moscow - no answer
Paris - no answer
Warsaw had been fighting for days
Without water, food or ammunition
Defending every house savagely
Every life, every hope
"We have one man for every two rifles"
And the boy cried out
But he was not crying because he was scared
He was crying because he had never been a boy
He had never been a soldier
He did not know what he was
But when he saw those sheets
They looked like sails to him
He took one and ran out
Because no one has ever saved anyone without help
But one can and must resist
