And soon the hounds they leapt about
And the hawks flew in the air.
Then Henry he has mounted up,
Put his lady on before.
And straightway to the church they rode
To keep the oath he swore.
And they rode on into the town
From out the wild woods green.
And the people clammered all around
To see their strange new queen.

Le Roi Henri

Que jamais l’homme qui courtise à cheval
N’oublie jamais ces trois choses :
Une bourse d’or, un cœur amoureux
Et rempli de charité.
Car il arriva au roi Henri,
Alors qu’il était à la chasse,
Tenant son faucon, son bon lévrier
Courant à ses côtés.
Il a pourchassé le chevreuil devant lui,
Il a pourchassé le cerf jusqu’à son terrier,
Et le plus gras des cerfs de tout le troupeau,
Le jeune roi Henri l’a tué.
Le roi Henri mangea de la venaison,
Les chiens burent du sang ;
Ils se couchèrent et s’endormirent,
Endormis comme s’ils étaient morts.
Il était environ minuit,
L’heure où tous les hommes dorment,
Un vent glacial soufflait autour de la maison,
Les arbres eux-mêmes pleuraient.
De grands tremblements secouèrent la maison,
Des secousses qui firent voler la porte en éclats ;
La femme la plus hideuse qui ait jamais existé
Entra en tapant du pied.
Sa tête touchait le toit du pavillon de chasse,
Sa taille, ma chère, sa taille, vous pouviez à peine l’entourer de vos bras ;
Si une femme plus laide vivait,
Elle n’était connue ni de Dieu ni des hommes.
