The ant and the grasshopper, everyone knows how the story goes,
How the ant was diligent, never spent
Anything lightly, laboured wisely,
And gathered his store for tomorrow.
As for the grasshopper, clad in the summer sunshine,
Light as the wind on the broken water,
His song he gave to the summer days,
Singing "Where the dance leads I′ll follow".
Then came a hard winter, nothing grew, and the cold wind blew,
But the ant was safe and sound, underground.
Carefully counting his pile around him,
Dividing his time until tomorrow.
Now see the grasshopper, blown by the north wind's fury,
Hungering for the easy summer,
Comes to the ant and says, "My brother, give me bread,
"Now′s the dance that I must follow".
"Why did you waste the summer, summers don't last forever,
"You're just an idle beggar, you must pay the price, sacrifice.
"You wouldn′t heed me, you took life easy -
"Take the punishment that follows".
Now see the grasshopper reel like a dry leaf falling,
Weaving a dance that will last forever,
Back goes the ant to his nest to work, to feed, to rest,
For him there will always be tomorrow.

La Fourmi et la Sauterelle

La fourmi et la sauterelle, tout le monde connaît l'histoire,
Comment la fourmi était diligente, n'a jamais dépensé
Rien à la légère, travaillait sagement,
Et rassemblait ses provisions pour demain.
Quant à la sauterelle, vêtue du soleil d'été,
Léger comme le vent sur l'eau brisée,
Son chant il le donnait aux jours d'été,
Chantant "Où la danse mène, je suivrai".
Puis vint un hiver rigoureux, rien ne poussait, et le vent froid soufflait,
Mais la fourmi était saine et sauve, sous terre.
Comptait soigneusement sa pile autour de lui,
Divisant son temps jusqu'à demain.
Maintenant, vois la sauterelle, soufflée par la fureur du vent du nord,
Affamée pour l'été facile,
Vient à la fourmi et dit, "Mon frère, donne-moi du pain,
"Maintenant, c'est la danse que je dois suivre".
"Pourquoi as-tu gaspillé l'été, les étés ne durent pas éternellement,
"Tu n'es qu'un mendiant oisif, tu dois payer le prix, sacrifier.
"Tu ne voulais pas m'écouter, tu as pris la vie facile -
"Prends la punition qui suit".
Maintenant, vois la sauterelle chanceler comme une feuille sèche qui tombe,
Tisser une danse qui durera éternellement,
La fourmi retourne à son nid pour travailler, pour nourrir, pour se reposer,
Pour lui, il y aura toujours demain.
