The Escapade

Narration: there was one who was famed for the number of things
He forgot when he entered the ship:
His umbrella, his watch, all his jewels and rings,
And the clothes he had bought for the trip.
He had forty-tow boxes all carefully packed,
With his name painted clearly on each;
But since he omitted to mention the fact,
They were all left behind on the beach.

He came as a baker; but owned, when too late-

And it drove the poor bellman half mad-
He could only bake bridecake -for which, I may state,
No materials were to be had.

I came as the baker on this escapade,
I knead the dough, but I can't look after the bread,
The banker does it instead,
And although I never feel afraid,
Somehow I know
It could be the single worst mistake I've ever made,
To come as the baker on this escapade.

Narration: il y en avait un qui était célèbre pour le nombre de choses
Qu'il oubliait lorsqu'il montait à bord du navire :
Son parapluie, sa montre, tous ses bijoux et ses bagues,
Et les vêtements qu'il avait achetés pour le voyage.
Il avait quarante-deux boîtes soigneusement emballées,
Avec son nom peint clairement sur chacune ;
Mais comme il a omis de mentionner le fait,
Elles ont toutes été laissées sur la plage.

Il est venu comme boulanger ; mais il a appris, trop tard-

Et cela a rendu le pauvre portier fou-
Il ne pouvait faire cuire que des gâteaux de mariage - pour lesquels, je tiens à le préciser,
Aucun matériau n'était disponible.

Je suis venu comme boulanger pour cette escapade,
Je pétris la pâte, mais je ne peux pas m'occuper du pain,
Le banquier s'en occupe à la place,
Et même si je n'ai jamais peur,
Je sais en quelque sorte
Que cela pourrait être la pire erreur que j'aie jamais faite,
De venir comme boulanger pour cette escapade.
