Twas the Night Before Christmas
'Twas the night before Christmas,
When all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even a mouse!

The stockings all hung
By the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas
Soon would be there!

The children were nestled
All safe in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums
Danced in their heads!

And Mom in her kerchief
And I in my cap,
Had just settled down
For a long winter's nap!

When out on the lawn
There arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed
To see what was the matter!

Away to the window
I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters
And threw up the sash!

The moon on the breast
Of the new fallen snow,
Gave the lustre of midday
To object below!

When what to my wandering eyes
Should appear,
But a miniature sleigh
And eight tiny reindeer!

With a little ol' driver
So lively and quick,
I knew in a moment
It must be St. Nick!

More rapid than eagles
His courses they came,
As he whistled and shouted
And called them by name:

"Now Dasher,
Now Dancer,
Now Prancer,
Now Vixen,
On Comet,
On Cupid,
On Doner
An' Blitzen!"

To the top of the porch,
To the top of the wall,
Now dash-away, dash-away,
Dash-away all!

As dry leaves
Before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle
Mount to the sky.

So, up to the housetop
The courses they flew,
With a sleigh full of toys
And St. Nicholas too!

And then in a twinkling
I heard on the roof,
The prancing and pawing
Of each little hoof!

As I drew in my head
And was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas
Came with a bound!

He was dressed all in fur
From his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished
With ashes and soot!

A bundle of toys
He had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler
Just opening his pack!

His eyes how they twinkled,
His dimples how merry,
His cheeks were like roses,
His nose like a cherry!

His drawl little mouth
Was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin
Was a white as the snow!

The stump of his pipe
He held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head
Like a wreath!

He had a broad face
And a round little belly,
That shook when he laughed
Like a bowl full of jelly!

He was chubby and plump,
A right jolly old elf,
I laughed when I saw him
In spite of myself!

A wink of his eye
And a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know
I had nothing to dread!

He spoke not a word
But went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings,
Then turned with a jerk!

An' laying a finger
Along side his nose,
An' giving a nod,
Up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh,
To his team gave a whistle,
An' away they all flew
Like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim
As he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to All,
And to All a Goodnight!"

C'était la veille de Noël
C'était la veille de Noël,
Quand dans toute la maison,
Pas une créature ne bougeait,
Pas même une souris!

Les chaussettes étaient toutes accrochées
Près de la cheminée avec soin,
Dans l'espoir que Saint Nicolas
Serait bientôt là!

Les enfants étaient blottis
Tous en sécurité dans leurs lits,
Tandis que des visions de sucreries
Dansaient dans leurs têtes!

Et Maman dans son foulard
Et moi dans ma casquette,
Nous venions juste de nous installer
Pour un long sommeil d'hiver!

Quand sur la pelouse
Il y eut un tel vacarme,
Que je me suis précipité hors de mon lit
Pour voir ce qui se passait!

Vers la fenêtre
J'ai couru comme l'éclair,
J'ai ouvert les volets
Et j'ai levé la fenêtre!

La lune sur le sein
De la neige fraîchement tombée,
Donnait l'éclat du midi
Aux objets en dessous!

Quand à mes yeux ébahis
Dut apparaître,
Un traîneau miniature
Et huit petits rennes!

Avec un petit vieux conducteur
Si vif et rapide,
Je sus en un instant
Que ce devait être le Père Noël!

Plus rapides que des aigles
Ses coursiers arrivèrent,
Alors qu'il sifflait et criait
Et les appelait par leur nom:

"Maintenant Tornade,
Maintenant Danseur,
Maintenant Furieux,
Maintenant Vif,
Sur Comète,
Sur Cupidon,
Sur Tonnerre
Et Éclair!"

En haut du porche,
En haut du mur,
Maintenant filez, filez,
Filez tous!

Comme des feuilles mortes
Devant l'ouragan sauvage s'envolent,
Lorsqu'elles rencontrent un obstacle
S'élèvent vers le ciel.

Ainsi, jusqu'au sommet du toit
Les coursiers volèrent,
Avec un traîneau rempli de jouets
Et le Père Noël aussi!

Et puis en un clin d'œil
J'entendis sur le toit,
Les piaffements et les trépignements
De chaque petit sabot!

Alors que je rentrais la tête
Et que je me retournais,
Par la cheminée le Père Noël
Descendit d'un bond!

Il était vêtu de fourrure
De la tête aux pieds,
Et ses vêtements étaient tout tachés
De cendres et de suie!

Un paquet de jouets
Il avait jeté sur son dos,
Et il ressemblait à un colporteur
Ouvrant son baluchon!

Ses yeux brillaient,
Ses fossettes étaient si joyeuses,
Ses joues étaient comme des roses,
Son nez comme une cerise!

Sa petite bouche tirée
Était arquée comme un arc,
Et la barbe de son menton
Était aussi blanche que la neige!

Le tuyau de sa pipe
Il le tenait serré entre ses dents,
Et la fumée entourait sa tête
Comme une couronne!

Il avait un visage large
Et un petit ventre rond,
Qui tremblait quand il riait
Comme un bol plein de gelée!

Il était grassouillet et dodu,
Un joyeux vieux lutin,
J'ai ri quand je l'ai vu
Malgré moi!

Un clin d'œil
Et un hochement de tête,
M'ont vite fait comprendre
Que je n'avais rien à craindre!

Il ne dit pas un mot
Mais se mit directement au travail,
Et remplit toutes les chaussettes,
Puis se retourna d'un coup sec!

Et posant un doigt
Le long de son nez,
Et faisant un signe de tête,
Il remonta la cheminée!

Il sauta dans son traîneau,
Siffla son attelage,
Et ils s'envolèrent tous
Comme le duvet d'un chardon.

Mais je l'entendis s'écrier
Alors qu'il disparaissait de ma vue,
"Joyeux Noël à tous,
Et à tous une bonne nuit!"
