Es ist ein Ros entsprungen
Aus einer Wurzel zart.
Wie uns die Alten sungen,
Von Jesse kam die Art
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht,
Mitten im kalten Winter,
Wohl zu der halben Nacht.
Das Röslein, das ich meine,
Davon Jesaia sagt:
Ist Maria, die reine,
Die uns das Blümlein bracht.
Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat
Hat sie ein Kind geboren
Und blieb ein reine Magd.
Das Bümelein so kleine,
Das duftet uns so süß,
Mit seinem hellen Scheine
Vertreibt's die Finsternis.
Wahr' Mensch und wahrer Gott,

A Rose Has Sprung

A rose has sprung
From a tender root.
As the ancients sung to us,
From Jesse came the seed,
And brought forth a flower,
In the midst of the cold winter,
Near to the midnight hour.
The little rose, I mean,
Of which Isaiah spoke:
It is Mary, the pure,
Who brought forth the flower.
According to God's eternal plan
She gave birth to a child
And remained a pure virgin.
The little tree so small,
Which smells so sweet,
With its bright light
Drives away the darkness.
Truly man and truly God,
Helps us out of all suffering,
Rescues us from sin and death.
O Jesus, until the parting
From this vale of tears
Let your help guide us
Into the halls of joy,
Into thy Father's kingdom,
Where we will praise thee eternally;
O God, grant us this!
