Rashed Al-Majedtranslation in English

Last Night
Last night while people were asleep
I cried my heart out and revealed my every secret
I rose to moan for him and shed my tears
From the depths of my eyes, tears that had been stored away
And I cried until whoever heard me could no longer sleep
As if I were a pigeon whose nest had been stolen
Or like a dove that had lost its mate
Leaving its companions in debt to their enemies
Or perhaps I became a mourning dove
Whose cooing brings tears to the eyes
You hear its cries amidst the branches
And its lamentations make the nightingales weep
Or like an infant who has been weaned too soon
Whose mother left before his fortieth day
Fate struck after the month of fasting
And he was buried on the second day of Eid with his face towards Mecca
They covered him with a fine cloth from Al-Kharj
And the tribes gathered around him and mourned
They carried him to the mosque for the funeral prayer
And as they buried him, they prayed to God
For his forgiveness, for Paradise, and for a good end
And the tears streamed down my cheeks
O grave, water his soil with the purest rain
May clouds of mercy pour upon him
I wish that the branches of the lotus and the rue
Would grow upon the grave where he lies buried today
May he rest in peace, for he never walked in blame
His neighbors never complained about him
I have spent ten years since he left
Years that have passed like colorless shadows
By God, it seems as if I have only spent a year
And with the help of God, I will endure the days, no matter how hard they may be
My greatest sorrow comes from my orphaned children
When I see them weeping before me
If I tell them not to cry, they ask why
We weep, they say, as do those who mourn
I asked why they wept, and they said, because they are orphans
I said that I am the orphan, and you are imprisoned
With the orphans and all their wounds
But there are wounds in my heart that will never heal
I sought consolation from my friends
They came to me to offer their condolences for the loss of my beloved
They said, "Marry and forget your troubles"
"After all, not all women are the same"
But I fear the women who dwell in darkness
Those who do not care about the pain of others
Or perhaps a woman who is fully in control of her mind
Who smiles while she bites your cheek with her sharp tongue
She will hurt my children with her words
And she will poison me with her bitter words
By God, if it were not for these orphaned children
And my fear that they will lose their way
I would say that all women are forbidden
And I would be patient, as a prisoner is patient with his imprisonment
May God's peace be upon him every day
As many as the pilgrims to the Kaaba and those who circumambulate it
Peace be upon the master of all mankind
Upon the Prophet, may those who came to pray upon him be blessed
